XENIA SCOUTS  5  SOUTHERN OHIO COPPERHEADS  0  -  FINAL

GRADY’S FIELD - The Xenia Scouts continuing rolling with a 5-0 shutout victory at home over the Southern Ohio Copperheads. The Scouts (14-8) remain atop of the GLSCL South Division standings after earning its fourth consecutive win.

 

The game was a pitcher’s duel throughout the first eight innings with both pitching staffs being represented well during the contest.

 

Owen Shimmel (Lancaster Bible College) got the start but had to be pulled after three innings of work. Shimmel gave up just one hit striking out three batters in facing just 10 batters.

 

Luke Holcomb (Iowa Lakes CC) got the early call out of the bullpen for Xenia saving the Scouts from what could have been a tough situation. Holcomb three six shutout innings on his way to improving his record to 3-0 on the season.

 

Holcomb did not allow a base runner into scoring position  until two outs into the ninth inning. He gave up a total of four hits, two of which were in the ninth.

 

Holcomb and Shimmel combined on the shutout without allowing a walk or a hit batter.

The Copperheads (8-14) held up its end for the most part on the mound but the Scouts took advantage of every scoring opportunity.

 

Jack Leonard (Hanover College) went seven innings earning a tough luck loss giving up just two runs, only one of which were earned, on five hits. Leonard did give surrender three walks while registering three strikeouts.

 

The Scouts scored first taking advantage on a costly Copperheads error in bottom of the first inning. 

 

With two outs and a runner on base, Troy Lynch (University of Minnesota Duluth) tapped a bouncer back to the pitcher’s mound. Leonard mishandling it allowing Lynch to reach and Ayden Alsobrooks (East Mississippi College) to advance to third. Bo Solley (Rollins College) singled driving home Alsobrooks scoring the unearned run.

 

In the fifth inning, Roland Reyes (Westmont College) doubled and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Reyes scored on an RBI-groundout by Jacob Souders (Samford University) giving Xenia a 2-0 lead.

 

The Scouts put it out of reach in the eighth inning when Southern Ohio went to its bullpen. 

 

Solley walked and then stole both second and third scoring on an RBI-single by Kaden Wu (Gateway CC). Hugh LeMasters (East Mississippi College) tripled into the right-center field gap driving in Carter Jackman (Mississippi College) and Wu capping the three-run inning.

 

Alsobrooks and LeMasters each had two hits in the series clinching victory for the Scouts.

 

The series concludes on Thursday with the Scouts going for the sweep when the two teams return to Grady’s Field at 7:05pm.

 

 

LIMA LOCOS  7  MUSKEGON CLIPPERS  6  -  Suspended in Bottom of 8th

MARSH FIELD - The Lima Locos were leading the Muskegon Clippers 7-6 with two outs in bottom of the eighth inning when play was stopped due to a rain delay.

 

The game was eventually suspended and will be picked up at the point of interruption on Thursday afternoon at Marsh Field.

 

Muskegon took the early lead scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Clippers only needed one hit during the inning thank to six walks allowed by the Lima starter. That one hit was and RBI-single by Braden Graves scoring his Chattanooga State Tech teammate Taylor Head.

 

The Locos chipped away eventually taking a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning. Lima tied the score 4-4 when Charlie Vercruysse (Purdue commit) smacked a double driving in David Falloon (Mercer University). The Locos took the lead 5-4 later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Brecken Menuet (Louisiana Tech) that sent home Payton Ebbing (Kent State University).

 

The Clippers answered tying the score 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth. Connor Kelly (Northwood University) singles and came around to score on an RBI-ground out by Jackson Isaacs (Western Michigan University).

 

Muskegon took its second lead of the day in the fifth when Ethan Delgado (Ecclesia College) delivered with and RBI-single scoring Casey Joppie (Saginaw Valley State).

 

The Locos scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth as the impending storm lurked toward Marsh Field. Vercruysse’s two-run single gave Lima a 7-6 lead.

 

The Clippers were rallying at the point off interruption in the bottom of the eighth. Joseph Chrapliwy (Purdue Fort Wayne) reached on a two-out single to center field. Barnes worked a walk after Chrapliwy had stolen second base. Nolan Zajac (Western Michigan University was at the plate with a 1-1 count when the game was halted and eventually suspended.

 

The suspended game will resume at 5:05pm with the regularly schedule game, which will now be a seven-inning game, set for the a minimum of 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

 

HAMILTON JOES  9  GRAND LAKE MARINERS  9  -  Hamilton win in Sudden Death

MONTGOMERY FIELD - The Hamilton Joes survived sudden death by holding the Grand Lake Mariners from scoring getting out of Celina with a win on Wednesday night.

 

The game was tied 9-9 going into the sudden death inning. The Mariners took to the offensive meaning if they score they win the game.

 

All Hamilton had to do was prevent Grand Lake from scoring and that is exactly what happened. The Joes turned to reliever Matty Helms (Northern Kentucky transfer) who had held the Mariners scoreless in the tenth inning.

 

Helms completed his second inning of work by forcing Sammy Besztery (University of Rochester) to ground out to second base ending the threat and capping the victory.

 

The Mariners led the game 5-1 going into the eighth inning when the Joes exploded for eight runs. Hamilton sent 12 batters to the plate and when the dust settled lead the game 9-5.

 

Brett Denby (Wright State) and Miguel Correa (Central Michigan University) each provided two-run singles during the eight-run outburst.

 

Hamilton would not lead for long as Grand Lake answered by scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. 

 

The Mariners (8-14) also rallied in the ninth inning tying the game 9-9 when Besztery singled driving in Isaac Sobieszczyk (Bradley University).

 

Sobieszczyk went 4-for-6 on the night with a double a three runs scored. Christian Roa (Miami University) was 3-for-6 for the Joes.

 

Hamilton (12-11) won its first sudden game in three prior attempts including falling to Xenia this past Sunday night.

The series moves back to the Foundation Field on Thursday night with the Joes going for the sweep and the Mariners attempting to avoid that fate.

 

 

MICHIGAN MONARCHS  10  FLAG CITY SLUGGERS  5  -  FINAL  

HILLSDALE COLLEGE - The Michigan Monarchs evened up its series against the Flag City Sluggers with a 10-5 win at Hillsdale College.

 

The game saw a total of 12 errors with seven of them charged to Flag City and five to the Monarchs.

 

Cannon Paul (Western Michigan) lead the way offensively for the Monarchs going 2-for-3 with double and two RBIs. Kopper Etheridge (Madonna Unversity) was a terror on the base paths drawing four walks and scoring four runs.

 

Flag City’s Harrison Engskov (Arkansas State transfer) hit is team leading third home run of the season. Andrew Stechschulte (Ohio Northern) also provided two hits including a double and a run scored.

 

The series will be decided on Thursday in Findlay at Marathon Diamonds with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
