XENIA SCOUTS  6  HAMILTON JOES  5 -  FINAL

GRADY’S FIELD - The last inning and half was drama filled as the Xenia Scouts stole an unlikely victory beating the Hamilton Joes 6-5 on Grady’s Field at Browne Stadium.

The win allows Xenia (11-8) to remain in first place ahead of Hamilton (10-10) in the GLSCL South Division standings.

The Scouts trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the eight innings before tying the score 3-3. The Joes retook the lead in the ninth 5-3 only to suffer an epic bullpen meltdown allowing the Scouts to literally walk off the game for the win.

Hamilton took a 3-1 advantage going into the bottom of the eight inning. Owen Shimmel (Lancaster Bible College), a pitcher by trade making just his third plate appearance of the summer, was sent to the plate leading off the inning. Shimmel promptly singled to begin the game-tying rally.

Johnathan Jackson (Harding University) came in to pinch run advancing to second on a throwing error during a pickoff attempt. Jackson took third base and then scored on an RBI-groundout by Gus Gandy (Samford University).

The Scouts tied the score 3-3 when Noah Manasan (Arizona Christian University) crossed the plate on a passed ball.

Hamilton reliever Evan Scott (Flagler College), who was signed to the team earlier in the day, struck out Xenia’s Caleb Webster (Trevecca Nazarene) ending the inning.

The Joes answered in the top of the ninth inning retaking the lead 5-3. Travis Yankovich (Lake Erie College) delivered a two-run single scoring both Diego DeCello (Marietta College) analyst Gio Melchione (UNLV).

The Scouts had one last chance to overcome a two-run deficit and would score three runs without the benefit of a hit.

The Joes called on Ashton Hopewell (Catawba Valley CC) to close it out but he walked the bases loaded recording just one out. Hopewell departed in favor of Matty Helms (Northern Kentucky transfer) who promptly hit Jackson forcing home Troy Lynch (University of Minnesota Duluth) from third base.

Helms proceeded to then walk Manasan and Gundy forcing home the tying and winning runs.

The late meltdown over shadow a great pitching performance put in by the Joes starter Charles Dieruf (Miami University). Dieruf went seven innings striking out 11 batters giving up just one run and one hit.

Xenia starter Oliver Adams (North Greenville) also pitched well striking out seven batters in his six innings of work giving up just two hits and two runs.

The rubber game of the series takes place on Sunday with the teams returning to the Athletes in Action Sports Complex for a 5:05pm scheduled first pitch.

LIMA LOCOS  3  MICHIGAN MONARCHS  1  -  FINAL

HILLSDALE COLLEGE - The Lima Locos clinched its weekend series with the second place Michigan Monarchs with a 3-1 a road victory on Saturday night.

The Locos (13-6) extended its lead in the GLSCL North Division standings over the Monarchs (11-9) by two and a half games. Lima also now possesses the best team win-loss record in the GLSCL.

Pitching was a strength for both teams with the Locos making its effort on the mound standup for the victory. Anderson Hayes (Notre Dame) went the first six innings giving up just one run on four hits. Hayes registered seven strikeouts while walking just two batters.

Anthony Lariz (Central Florida) went the final three innings securing his first save of the season. Lairz gave up just three hits and a walk to go with his three strikeouts.

The Locos struck first when Braydon Kersey (Mercer University) tripled and then scored on an RBI-single by Evan Holstein (Kennesaw State).

Lima tacked on two more runs in the second inning. Grant McGuire’s (Winthrop University) triple was followed by a double off the bat of Luke Mottola (Central Florida). Mottola later scored on a sacrifice fly by (Reese Borho (Abilene Christinan).

The Monarchs pitching staff held off the Locos offense the rest of the way. Starter Johnathan Meyette (Macomb CC) ended up striking out eight batters in seven innings of work.

Ryan Torok (University of Toledo) pitched a perfect final two innings setting down all six batters that he faced.

However, the Monarchs bats remained silent only scoring its lone run in the fifth inning. Christian Holmes (UIC transfer) lead off the inning with a double, one of his two hits in the game, scoring on an RBI-single by Cole Van Ameyde (Michigan State commit).

The series wraps up in Hillsdale on Sunday as the Locos go for the sweep. The Monarchs look to avoid that fate when the first pitch takes place at a schedule 4:35pm.

GRAND LAKE MARINERS  5  MUSKEGON CLIPPERS  2 -  FINAL

MONTGOMERY FIELD - The Grand Lake Mariners snapped a four-game losing streak with a 5-2 win at home over the Muskegon Clippers.

Grand Lake (7-12) broke up a 1-1 tie scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Ty O’Brien allowed the Mariners to take the lead stepping to the plate with a bases loaded and delivering a two-run single. Sam Reczek (Olivet Nazarene) scored on an RBI-single by Jake Lopez (University of Scranton transfer) and O’Brien crossed the pay station thanks to a sacrifice fly by Sammy Besztery (University of Rochester).

Muskegon (8-12) rallied in the ninth inning but it wasn’t enough to make the comeback. Aidan Robinson (Northwood University) scored on a single to center field by Davis Weeks (Michigan State).

Unfortunately, that was all the closer the Clippers would get as the potential tying run was at the plate at the end of the game. Grand Lake reliever Ty Kiehl (Miami-Hamilton) registered a game ending strikeout stranding two runners on base.

The Clippers didn’t help it cause by stranding a GLSCL season high 17 runners on base. Muskegon had plenty of chances leaving the bases loaded in four different innings.

Taylor Head (Chattanooga State Tech) and Jack Bakus (Lansing CC) each had two hits for the Clippers.

The Mariners were much more efficient only needing six hits to score its five runs.

The three-game set concludes in Celina on Sunday afternoon with the series on the line. The rubber game is scheduled to begin at Montgomery Field at 4:05pm.
