BOSTON (April 12, 2017)- The United Women’s Lacrosse League (UWLX) has announced the hiring of Hall of Fame lacrosse coach Regy Thorpe as the newest Head Coach of the Defending UWLX Champion Long Island Sound. The Sound have also announced that fellow Syracuse Assistant Caitlin Defliese and Ohio State assistant Jill Byers will join Coach Thorpe on the sideline for the Sound.   

Coach Thorpe is currently the Associate Head Coach of the Syracuse Women’s team, serving as the chief deputy for Head Coach Gary Gait. Coach Thorpe is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association Lacrosse Hall of Fame and a National Championship player for the Syracuse Orangemen as part of the 1993 squad.

Coach Defliese joined the Orange staff in the fall of 2016 after serving for five years as Associate Head Coach of Stony Brook, helping to grow a successful program there. Her prowess as a defensive coordinator has led to the development of several All-Americans and some of the top ranked defenses in the country.

Coach Byers, a 2009 Tewaaraton finalist, has served on staff of Ohio State for the past three seasons, helping to lead the team to consecutive berths in the NCAA Tournament. Prior to her duties at Ohio State, Coach Byers spent time with both Stony Brook and her alma mater, Notre Dame. 

“We are excited to have coaches like Coach Thorpe, Coach Defliese, and Coach Byers as part of our league,” stated UWLX CEO Digit Murphy. “Coaches of this caliber understand our commitment to ensuring we produce the best competition at the highest levels. We look forward to seeing what this staff can do with the reigning UWLX Champions.”

Coach Thorpe and his staff bring a wealth of coaching experience and knowledge to the Long Island Sound as they enter the second year of competition with the UWLX. The league will be hosting it’s second annual Draft Party on April 17th in New York City, presented by Coors Brewing Company. 

The new season will kick-off on Saturday May 27th with the Sound taking on the Baltimore Ride during the 2017 NCAA Final Four weekend.
