Long Island Stays Undefeated Heading into Playoffs
Date: Jul 24, 2017
Amherst, Mass.-
In a rematch of last year’s championship game, and the last two undefeated teams, Long Island (3-0) again came out on top of a tightly contested game with the Boston Storm (2-1), winning 10-9. The Sound were led by a balanced scoring effort, with goals coming from seven different goal scorers, and Caylee Waters anchoring the defense with six saves in the win.
The Sound got on the board first with back-to-back goals from Sarah Martin and Christina Esposito in the first five minutes. After that initial offensive outburst, the game turned into a defensive struggle, as it would not be until the 17:07 mark that another goal would be scored. This time it was Hannah Murphy (UMass ’17) putting Boston on the board for the first time. Boston quickly tied the game at two when McKinley Sbordone scored the first of her four goals, with an assist from Tanner Guarino (UMass ’14). Long Island ended the half on a 3-1 run, as Halle Majorana (Syracuse ’16) scored once and dished out her second assist to Sarah Martin. Boston got one back to make it 5-3 going into the break when Sbordone scored again.
Trailing by two, Boston came out strong in the second half, as Hannah Murphy scored just ten seconds in after she won a draw to herself, took it down the length of the field and scored. Murphy later completed her hat trick.
The Sound had five different goal scorers on five goals in the second half, as they continued their balanced attack. Taryn Van Thof and Esposito joined Martin as the only people to score multiple goals, as they each tallied their second of the game. Van Thof scored the eventual game winner with 6:44 left in the game. Caylee Waters came up big in goal, allowing nine goals and had six saves.
Boston challenged the Sound in the second half, outscoring them 6-5, but came up just short in the end. Sbordone led the way with four goals, while Murphy scored three in her homecoming to UMass. Sbordone’s final goal was at 5:15 on the clock, with the assist from Sarah Dalton, but Boston could not get the tying goal. The four UMass players on the Storm were right at home at Garber Field, as Tanner Guarino had a goal and two assists, Rachel Vallarelli got the start in goal and had five saves, and Kelsey Sheridan led the defensive effort with four ground balls. Also helping out on the defensive end and in the draw circle was Vicki Graveline, who finished the day with five caused turnovers and five draw wins.
Boston goes on the road the Cheynay University in Pennsylvania where they will take on the Philadelphia Force on Friday 6/16 at 7:00 p.m.
The Sound look to stay undefeated as they travel to Bel Air, Maryland on Saturday 6/17 with first draw set for 4:00 p.m.
