Wildcats Drop Twinbill to open up 2015 despite strong performance by Michael Whitt

Senior Michael Whitt recorded 4 hits and looked impressive in his one inning of work on the mound to open up the 2015 season but the Finneytown Wildcats dropped both games against the CCDS Indians. The Indians scored 3 runs in the first inning of game 1 and never looked back in a 6-1 victory while game 2 was a pitcher's duel between sophomore Joey Gerbus and CCD senior Cameron Alldred.

Sophomore Cameron Bartsch started the opener and made a decent first start despite a couple mistakes early on. In the bottom of the first, the Indians opened up the scoring with a single and a 2-run double with two outs. Bartsch almost got out of the jam by inducing an infield pop up with one out and runners on the corners and CCD sophomore catcher Ronnie Allen at the plate. However, Charlie Sachs drove a 1-0 pitch into center field for an RBI single to give the Indians the early lead. Sophomore Domenik Doane followed with a line a shot to center on a 2-1 pitch that junior Byron Famble slightly misjudged. Both runners on base scored to put the Wildcats in an early 3-0 hole. In the 3rd inning, Doane drove in another run on an RBI groundout to put the Indians up 4-0. They would finish their scoring in the following inning on a passed ball and a double by Cameron Alldred. That would close the book on Bartsch as he finished with 6 earned runs and 8 hits in his 4 innings of work. He also had 4 strikeouts and 2 walks in his first start of the 2015 season. The Wildcats scored their lone run on an error that followed a double by Bartsch. The aforementioned Whitt finished 2 for 3 in the first game while catcher Sam Brumett also managed 2 hits in the loss.

In Game 2, sophomore Joey Gerbus went up on the mound against senior University of Cincinnati commit Cameron Alldred. Gerbus and Alldred exchanged zeros across the board until the bottom of the 4th inning when the Indians managed to score 3 runs despite only recording one hit. Gerbus struck out senior third baseman (and Game 1 starting pitcher) Austin Richey to lead off the inning. However, the ball squirted away from catcher Sam Brumett and Richey would reach first safely. Ronnie Allen worked a walk against Gerbus and Charlie Sachs continued his damage from the opener with a double to right field, scoring Richey from second. The Wildcats elected to intentionally walk Domenik Doane to load the bases for the bottom of the order. The strategy appeared to have worked for a moment as Gerbus induced a foul pop up to third baseman Luke Steimle. However, the sophomore starter lost command and walked two out of the next three batters, forcing in two more runs. Alldred flew out to left field to end the inning but the damage was already done. That would mark the end of the day for Gerbus as he finished with 4 innings pitched, 6 strikeouts, 5 walks, 5 hits, and just one earned run. Sophomore Ryan Whitt followed with an inning of work, allowing a run on one hit and 3 walks. Older brother Michael followed with a scoreless 6th inning, allowing just one hit. With a four run lead, CCD turned to Charlie Sachs to close the game. Michael Whitt led off the inning by reaching on an error by the shortstop, the Indians' 3rd error of the day. After a strikeout, Adam Schwegman worked a walk. The defensive woes continued for CCD as Ryan Whitt reached on the Indians' 4th error of the day. After a Byron Famble strikeout, Joey Gerbus worked a walk and Luke Steimle was hit by a pitch, forcing in the Wildcats' first two runs. But with the tying run at second, Austin Cahill grounded out to Sachs to end the game. The Wildcats only managed 4 hits in the game, with Michael Whitt recording 2 of them. For CCD, Charlie Sachs led the way with 2 hits and an RBI. The Indians were led on the mound by Cameron Alldred. The senior southpaw threw 6 impressive innings with 13 strikeouts, 2 walks, and no runs. The only threat he faced was in the 3rd inning when Adam Schwegman reached on an error to lead off the inning. After a strikeout, junior center fielder Byron Famble doubled to left center. However, Jordan Girdler struck out swinging and Luke Steimle hit a soft liner to Charlie Sachs at 1st base to end the threat.

The Wildcats return to action on Monday, March 30th against Cincinnati Christian at Legacy Field in Mason, Ohio. Austin Cahill will make his 2015 pitching debut. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
