Wildcats end losing streak with thrilling walkoff win over...
Date: Apr 25, 2015
The Wildcats bats finally woke up from their season long slumber as they banged out 13 hits in a 13-3 run rule win over the Mariemont Warriors. Sam Brumett led the way with a 3 hit performance while Adam Schwegman, Joey Gerbus, and Michael Whitt all recorded 2 RBI games. Gerbus also started on the mound and threw a complete game, recording 5 strikeouts in his five innings of work.
The Warriors opened up the scoring with a 3 run first inning with the key hit being a one out two-RBI double by Ethan Bonnell. The Wildcats suffered a scare when the next batter, five hole hitter Henry Lewis, lifted a long fly ball to left field. Ryan Whitt and Byron Famble collided while trying to make the play, sending Whitt to the ground. As Famble retrieved the ball, Bonnell easily scored and Lewis ended up at third. After the play, Whitt was able to get back up and stay in the game despite the hard collision. Gerbus was able to retire the next two batters, ending the scoring for the Warriors for the inning as well as the rest of the night.
The Wildcats responded with two runs of their own in their half of the first inning on an RBI single by Famble and a passed ball. Gerbus started the inning with a walk while Michael Whitt would follow with a walk of his own. On a full count, Famble lined a single to right field, scoring Gerbus from second and sending Whitt to third. After a strikeout, starting pitcher Daniel Simons threw a wild pitch on the first pitch to Jordan Girdler, scoring Whitt from third. Girdler would fly into a double play to end the inning when Bonnell made a catch in shallow right field and was able to throw Famble out at home.
In the bottom of the 2nd, the Wildcats took the lead for good as they scored 3 runs on 3 hits and a walk. They would explode for 7 runs in the 3rd inning as they sent 11 batters to the plate. Five consecutive hitters reached safely via hit or walk in the offensive outburst as the Wildcats took a 12-3 lead after 3 innings. The nine run lead would be plenty for Gerbus as he had his way with the Warriors, allowing just one more hit the rest of the game to earn his first varsity win.
In the bottom of the 5th, the Wildcats were able to load the bases with two outs and Sam Brumett at the plate. With three hits already, Brumett was hit by a pitch, bringing home the 13th run of the game for the Wildcats and also envoking the 10 run rule, bringing the Wildcats their first victory of the 2015 season. The 13-3 win also marked the first time since 2010 that the Wildcats run ruled a conference opponent. The 13 runs also marked a season high for the Wildcats.
All in all, eight out of the nine Wildcat starters recorded at least one hit with four recording multiple hit games. For the Warriors, the aforementioned Lewis recorded 2 out of the 3 hits the offense managed throughout the night. The Wildcats continue play with a non conference game at Winton Woods on Thursday, April 16th. Luke Steimle will be making his first start on the mound for the Wildcats with the first pitch being set at 4:30.
