Warriors hold off Wildcats in low scoring affair

Date:  Source: Finneytown HS Wildcats Baseball

After two consecutive offensive explosions, the Wildcats' bats were unable to continue their hot hitting ways in a 3-1 loss to conference opponent Mariemont. Finneytown could only manage 3 hits against Mariemont pitching in the low scoring contest. The loss dropped the Wildcats to 1-3 in the conference, while Mariemont improved to 2-3. Austin Cahill suffered his 3rd loss of the season while Collin Theye picked up the win for the Warriors.

The Warriors opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first when Ethan Bonnell doubled in Matthew Teeters, who had reached on a walk. Henry Lewis followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Hayden Seeger, who had reached on a single following Teeters' walk. The two early runs would be all Theye would need as he carried a no hitter into the 6th inning. In his six innings of work, he only allowed two hits and one run, striking out 3 and walking five.

In the bottom of the third, the Warriors extended their lead to 3-0 when Kane Coates reached on a bases loaded error, allowing Hayden Seeger to score. Austin Cahill would get a double play to get out of the jam but gave way to senior Michael Whitt after the inning, who continued his dominant work out of the bullpen. Whitt threw 3 scoreless innings, keeping his league leading ERA at 0.00. Whitt, teammate Luke Steimle, and Reading's Kyle Bowling are currently the league's only pitchers with ERA's of 0.00 and at least 7 innings of work.

The Wildcats plated their only run in the 6th inning when Michael Whitt led off with the team's first hit of the game, a single to center field. Byron Famble followed with a soft ground ball to the first baseman, moving Whitt to second. After Luke Steimle worked a walk, Jordan Girdler grounded into a fielder's choice, advancing Whitt to third. Ryan Whitt lined the first pitch of his at bat into left field, scoring Whitt and preventing the shutout. However, with the tying run on base, Theye would get Austin Cahill to ground out to second, ending the rally for the Wildcats.

The very next inning, the Warriors brought on Ethan Bonnell to close the game. After retiring the first two batters, sophomore Joey Gerbus lined a single into right field, bringing up Michael Whitt as the tying run. On the first pitch he saw, Whitt popped out to third baseman Henry Lewis for the final out of the game. The loss dropped the Wildcats' overall record to 2-6 while the Warriors improved to 2-4. In 4 of their six losses, the Wildcats have had the tying run on the bases or at the plate in their final at bat.

The Wildcats will play next at Madeira on Monday, April 20th. Joey Gerbus will make his 4th start of the season with first pitch set at 4:30.
