NWLA Tournament: Round 3
Date: Oct 17, 2012
Andrew Zaleski of the Filippone Heat has been voted the 2012 NWBL West Division Cy Young. Members of the National Wiffleball League Association, players and managers of the National Wiffleball League, and the NWBL Commissioner have voted Zaleski this year's best pitcher of the West Division.
In what was a shocking win, Zaleski ousted favorites in Vinny Plateroti and Steve Coral for the West Cy Young. Zaleski had the "Felix Hernandex situation", a very good pitcher stuck on a team that did not perform. Despite an umimpressive record, Zaleski has been associated with words such as "filthy", "impressive", and "best" all season long.
Zaleski led the league in strikeouts by a wide margin, finishing among the most in a season all-time, well into the 70s. On pace for 100, he would have completely smashed the NWBL record if the season was not permanently shortened 12 games.
On a Heat team that was outscored by 30 runs this season, Zaleski finished the year with a ERA in the low 3s. He had the best pitches, but could not get the run support.
As the votes came in, and what could be seen as a controversial win, Zaleski was the best pitcher in the West.
