Andrew Zaleski and Jack Mulroony are headed to the Lackawanna Rapids. The Lackawanna Rapids shocked the National Wiffleball League on Sunday when the franchise announced the signing of two members of the Filippone Heat, Andrew Zaleski and Jack Mulroony. The move, one of the more shocking NWBL transactions in recent history, secured the future of the Rapids but sent the future of the Heat into jeopardy.

While the 2012 campaign has not completed, the deal will not be official until the season and resigning period concludes, two weeks after the playoffs end. With commitments from Zaleski and Mulroony, only the Rapids can end this deal before the signing period ends.

The Filippone Heat have been a member of the NWBL since 2006, winning a NWBL Championship in 2010 along with another championship appearance in 2006. Mulroony had been the team’s founder and manager over the past seven seasons. Zaleski entered the league in 2010 and has been one of the league’s premier players over than span.  The NWBL is currently looking into finding new players to help rebuild the fallen Heat team for 2013.

Regarding the signing, the Commissioner stated, "Many have stated their concern for the Filippone Heat franchise, with two of their most dedicated players leaving. Currently, you can say that the Heat do not exist, but come 2013, I will promise the Heat franchise will continue. New players and management will continue the journey started back in 2006."

Zaleski won Rookie of the Year and Gold Glove in 2010. Mulroony has won a Player of the Year, Cy Young, MVP and two Gold Glove awards over his career.

"With the scheduling changes and new roster requirements for 2013, it has been made known and encouraged for managers to leave and recruit to help bring together a stable, dedicated team."

Over the past few weeks the Rapids were knocked out of the playoffs in the first round and rumors of the franchise’s possible bleak future arose. With Shane Hanley and Adam Skurat free-agents, and their uncertainty towards the 2013 season, the Rapids acted quick with these two huge signings. Lackawanna still has cap room to resign Hanley or Skurat as the team’s fifth player.
