QUINCY -- The Quincy Gems snapped a seven-game losing streak, their longest since they joined the Prospect League in 2009, on Sunday night with a 6-4 victory over the Hannibal Cavemen at QU Stadium.
The Gems are 9-1 against the Cavemen this summer. They are 20-23 overall and 2-10 in the second half.
Frankie Perrone hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the third to break a scoreless tie, and Shea Stine singled in Dean Nevarez in the fourth. Hannibal scored runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but a double play on a fly ball to right field ruined a chance for a big inning for the Cavemen in the sixth.
Quincy made the score 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth when Thompson singled and Nevarez blasted a home run to left-center.
Starting pitcher Jake Haberer went the first five innings. Colan Treml and Kenny LaPierre combined for three innings of scoreless relief, and Elvin Ramos allowed a run in the ninth but still earned his fifth save.
Nevarez and Stine both had two hits for the Gems.
