QUINCY -- The Quincy Gems were limited to two hits over the first six innings Thursday night and suffered a 6-3 loss to the DuPage Dragons in a Prospect League game at QU Stadium.
The Gems (19-23 overall), the first-half champions in the West Division, are 1-10 in the second half. They have lost seven games in a row for their longest losing streak since they joined the Prospect League in 2009. They trail the Springfield Sliders (25-14, 8-1 second half) by 8 games in the West.
DuPage scored twice in the first inning and twice in the third inning off starter and loser Sam Huser (4-1).
After Mitch Carriger led off the game for the Gems with a single, the next 15 Quincy batters were set down in order until C.J. Schaeffer led off the sixth with a single. Carriger also drew a walk in the inning, but Trey Mathis grounded into an inning-ending double play to end the threat.
The Gems finally broke through in the seventh. Joey Polak led off with a double, and two outs later, Frankie Perrone hit his first home run of the season. Scottie Sanders then reached base on an error, and after he moved to third on two wild pitches, Schaeffer doubled him in.
The only other hit the Gems could muster in the final two innings, however, was a leadoff double by Polak in the ninth.
