Six Gems named to Prospect League All-Star Game in Kokomo

QUINCY -- Six members of the Quincy Gems, first-half champions of the West Division of the Prospect League, were selected to play in the midseason all-star game on Wednesday in Kokomo, Ind.
Terre Haute had seven players selected. Lafayette, Danville and Springfield also six players selected.
Two Gems were named as starters.
* Mitch Carriger, a junior outfielder from Maryville University and Highland, Ill. He is hitting .258 with seven home runs (tied for the league lead) and 24 RBIs (third in the league). 
* Joey Polak, a designated hitter from Quincy Notre Dame High School who will attend the University of South Carolina in the fall. He leads the Gems with a .319 batting average and is tied with Carriger with seven home runs.
Three Gems were named as reserves.
* Trey Mathis, a junior corner infielder from Alabama-Huntsville and Decatur, Ala., is hitting .273 with 20 RBIs.
* Deion Thompson, a freshman from Western Illinois and Bloomington, Ill., is hitting .268 with four triples, four home runs and a team-best 24 RBIs.
* Jake Walters, a second baseman from Quincy University and St. Louis, is hitting .258 with four homers and 21 RBIs.
One Gem was named as a pitcher.
* Jake Haberer, a right-handed junior from Eastern Illinois and Highland, Ill., is 2-1 with a 2.20 ERA in six starts.
