QUINCY -- Joey Polak hit a solo home run -- tying him for the Prospect League lead with seven -- with one out in the ninth inning to force extra innings, but the Quincy Gems gave up two runs in the top of the 11th inning Wednesday night in a 7-5 loss to the Danville Dans at QU Stadium.
The Gems (19-19 overall), the first-half champions in the West Division, are 1-5 in the second half.
The Gems had a scoring opportunity in the 10th. Trey Mathis had a one-out walk, and Frankie Perrone followed with a single to left. However, Scottie Sanders hit into a fielder's choice, forcing Perrone out at second, and Houston Looser lined out to second base.
The Dans scored twice in the top of the 11th against reliever Elvin Ramos, and the Gems were retired in order in the bottom of the 11th.
Danville scored in the top of the first, but Quincy responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning on Jake Walters' double to left-center that scored Joey Polak and Mitch Carriger.
Quincy went ahead 3-1 when Reed Sprinkle's sacrifice fly scored Sanders in the bottom of the second. Danville tied the game with two runs in the fourth, but Quincy regained the lead in the fifth on Walters' solo homer.
Danville tied the score with a solo tally in the seventh and took the lead with one run in the eighth.
Walters finished the game with a double, a homer, three RBIs and two walks. Sanders and Polak also both had two hits.
