QUINCY -- The Quincy Gems had two hits and scored two runs in the first inning of Saturday night's game, but they had just two hits and no more runs afterward and lost 5-2 to the DuPage Drones in a Prospect League game at QU Stadium.
The Gems (18-17 overall), the first-half champions in the West Division, are 0-3 in the second half.
The Gems are hitting .138 (12 for 87) and have scored four runs in the first three games of the second half.
Joey Polak led off the bottom of the first with a single, and with one out, Jake Walters walked. Both baserunners moved up on a wild pitch, and with two outs, Troy Mathis singled to center field to drive in two runs.
The Gems were punchless after the first inning and struck out 13 times against three Drones pitchers.
Quincy had a chance to get back in the game in the eighth inning when Polak walked and Mitch Carriger dropped down a bunt single. However, Walters popped up third, Thompson struck out and Mathis flew out to left.
Jake Haberer took the loss for Quincy, allowing eight hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings. Scott Gorsuch pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
