West Michigan squeaks by Pittsburgh, 5-3

The West Michigan Wolves and the Pittsburgh Vengeance were evenly matched throughout their contest, but West Michigan made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-3.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Michael Tratar's goal in the second period proved to be the difference maker.

Tratar had a great game for the Wolves, netting two goals.

West Michigan's penalty kill excelled, as the Wolves gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays.

Others who scored for West Michigan included Josh Somers, Kyle Keeder, and Devin Farkas, who each put in one. In addition, West Michigan received assists from Corey Siwula, Steven Rhodes, Mike Difranco, Sean Smalley, and Brandon Benaglio, who contributed one each and Zack Lloyd and Dakota Ulmer, who each chipped in two.

Pittsburgh's defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. The Vengeance average 2.5 goals allowed per game.

Pittsburgh was helped by Yevgeniy Gladkiy, who tallied one goal. Gladkiy scored 1:41 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Gus Peponidis picked up the assist. Pittsburgh additionally got points from Bryan Hovanec, who also registered one goal and one assist and Nils Markgren, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Pittsburgh came via Cody Black and Michael Straub, who contributed one each.

Chase Stanford made 19 saves for West Michigan on 22 shots. The Wolves incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Brian Baker recorded 24 saves for the Vengeance. Pittsburgh incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
