Date: Jun 29, 2025
Westhampton 7, Southampton 6 (8 Innings)
In a thrilling Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League showdown at Aviator Field on Saturday, the Westhampton Aviators pulled off a dramatic 7-6 comeback victory over the Southampton Breakers, capped by a clutch RBI single from Andrew Grenert (Pima CC) in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Aviators’ starter Luke Savage (Kenyon) was lights-out through the first five innings, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth. He kept the Breakers hitless for 5.1 innings until Sean Sweeney (Binghamton) broke it up with a sharp single that ignited a four-run rally, giving Southampton a 6–2 lead at the time.
Savage finished with 5.2 innings pitched, allowing three hits, six earned runs, and seven walks while striking out three. Despite the rocky sixth, the right-hander set the tone early and kept the Aviators in the game long enough for the bats to respond.
Before the four-run sixth, Southampton got their runs on a sacrifice fly by Derek Diaz (Le Moyne) in the second inning and a Westhampton error in the fourth despite being hitless. Westhampton finally answered in the fifth getting the tying runs from a Luke Rizzo (College of Wooster) double and a sacrifice fly from Mikey Brunetti (Bradley).
Westhampton quickly responded to Southampton’s four-run top of the sixth with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, including a solo home run from Brody Sprinkle (Azusa Pacific). The home run was his first of the season. Westhampton would get another run in the sixth on an RBI ground out from Kyle Bailey (Dickinson), making the score 6-4 in favor of the Breakers.
Westhampton would tie the score in the bottom of the seventh, first cutting the deficit to 6-5 on an RBI double from Tim Ford (Fordham) and then down to their last out tying the game on a Grant Kennedy (Richmond) RBI single.
In the bottom of the eighth, Andrew Grenert, who had struck out three times earlier, came through when it mattered most, lining the go-ahead RBI single to put the Aviators ahead 7–6.
Paden Mather (Wagner, 1-1) pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win, striking out three and allowing just two hits. His steady presence on the mound helped Westhampton complete the comeback.
Brunetti led the Aviators offensively, going 3-for-3 with a double, a sacrifice fly, an RBI, and two stolen bases. He raised his season average to a team-leading .379.
Shelter Island 9, Sag Harbor 8
A rollercoaster battle at Fiske Field on Saturday ended in dramatic fashion as the Shelter Island Bucks held off a late push from the Sag Harbor Whalers, escaping with a 9–8 victory in a high-scoring Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League showdown.
The win pushes Shelter Island to 7-6, while Sag Harbor drops to 5-5-3 on the season.
The Bucks trailed 7-3 entering the bottom of the fifth but responded with three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to grab a 9-8 lead they would not relinquish. A trio of multi-RBI performances helped power the Shelter Island lineup: John Gannon (St. Lawrence) went 2-for-3 with two RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored. Zach Dellerman (Wheeling Jesuit) added a 2-for-4 day, driving in two runs of his own. Tommy Munch (Occidental) and Gibby Sullivan (Bates) each contributed two RBI in key spots.
Leadoff man Billy Fluharty (Bucknell) sparked the Bucks throughout the afternoon, going 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base, while Jack Vallario (Fordham) drew a walk, scored twice, and stole two bases to stay aggressive on the basepaths.
For the Whalers, Dylan Kennedy-Fujah (St. John’s) delivered a monster day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and 4 RBI, including a crucial two-run single in the second inning that helped build an early 3-0 lead. First baseman Tyler Sirchia (Dartmouth) chipped in with two hits and 2 RBI, while Jaxon Beiswenger (Bucknell) and Jared Shear both tallied multi-hit efforts to keep Sag Harbor’s offense clicking.
The Bucks overcame four errors in the field, which helped Sag Harbor score six unearned runs. Fortunately, Shelter Island’s bullpen limited the damage late. Brennan Shapiro (Babson, 2-0) earned the win despite surrendering three runs across 3.1 innings, and Tyler Metcalf (Emerson) picked up his second save of the season by striking out one in a clean two-out seventh.
North Fork 8, South Shore 2
The North Fork Ospreys had an 8–2 victory over the South Shore Clippers on Saturday at Cochran Park, completing a home-and-home sweep and pushing their record to 9–4-1, one of the best marks in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League.
The Ospreys, who also beat the Clippers on Friday in Mastic Beach, continued their hot streak behind a power surge and strong pitching, while South Shore’s offense struggled to gain momentum.
North Fork wasted no time in setting the tone, plating two runs in the first inning and never looking back. The offensive charge was led by Rocco Cimino (Pace), who went 2-for-3 with a home run, walk, and an RBI while scoring three times. Nick Pratt (UMBC) added a two-run single and a sacrifice fly, totaling three RBIs. Steven Kienzle (Southern New Hampshire) launched his first home run of the summer in the first inning, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBI.
The Ospreys posted nine hits, including two home runs, and went 3-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
South Shore got all its offense in the first inning thanks to Anthony Scarabino (Albany), who crushed a two-run homer—his first of the season. But after that, the Clippers managed just one hit the rest of the game, finishing with three total.
Sebastian Perez (La Salle, 1-1) earned the win for North Fork, striking out six over five innings, allowing just three hits and two runs. Sean Elsee (Occidental) was perfect in relief, tossing two shutout innings while striking out one, earning the save.
The Ospreys' pitchers combined for seven strikeouts and six walks, but navigated through traffic effectively, thanks in part to two passed balls not resulting in damage.
With the win, North Fork improves to 9-4-1 and continues to build momentum as they remain in first place in the HCBL standings. The Clippers, now reeling after consecutive losses, will look to regroup as the season nears its midpoint.
