Jurassic Loss To Scouts On 7/1
Date: Jul 2, 2025
With Opening Night around the corner, the Southern Ohio Copperheads are bringing both experience and fresh energy to the field, thanks to a few familiar faces.
Veteran pitcher Drew Boyle is back for his third season in a Copperheads uniform, and for him, it’s about more than just the game.
“It's a great experience getting hands-on with this community,” Boyle said.
Boyle emphasized how much he enjoys the unique atmosphere of Copperheads baseball in Athens. From connecting with fans during games to traveling with teammates, he said, “It’s just an overall good experience for a college player to come play here and compete with the teams in this league.”
As the team heads into Opening Night at Bob Wren Stadium, Boyle’s mindset is clear: “This is my third year, so I’ve got some experience here. Now it’s just about going out there and having fun.”
Meanwhile, Matthew Blanchard, a former Copperhead himself, returns to the team this summer in a new role: as an assistant coach.
“It’s just a really cool opportunity,” Blanchard said. “Being able to know what it’s like on the player's side helps me prepare the team. And being part of this community again means a lot.”
Blanchard grew up just 25 minutes outside of Athens and knows firsthand how much the Copperheads team means to the area. That local connection is something he’s bringing into his coaching approach.
“It’s a new role for me,” he said. “I want to be the best I can for the players and for the fans. Obviously we want to win, but for me, it’s also about learning and adapting.”
As for the roster, Blanchard is optimistic about the season ahead. With a full squad of 35 players, including 20 pitchers in the mix, he’s excited to see how the team develops chemistry over time.
“Last year, it wasn’t until a week or two into games that you could tell guys really trusted each other,” he said. “Seeing that development, that’s what I’m excited for. I think it’s going to be a fun summer.”
With new leadership, a deep roster, and a packed summer ahead, the Copperheads are ready to make their mark.
Don’t miss the first game of the season Friday, June 6 at 7:05 p.m. against the Xenia Scouts at Bob Wren Stadium.
