UNB takes Atlantic Conference title

The UNB Reds claimed the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association (CCBA) Atlantic Championship on Saturday defeating the Acadia Axemen 10-0 and 8-5 in the best-of-three series. The Reds rode a brilliant pitching performance by Fredericton native, Colby Lyle who threw a no-hitter in game one which was a 6-inning mercy shortened affair. Lyle, a transfer from Dalhousie University, is in his third year of a Kinesiology degree at UNB and spends his Summer competing with the Fredericton Royals Senior Men’s team. Mike Washburn carried the Reds at the plate going 3 for 3 with a double and two singles with one RBI. Tom Gogan broke the game open in the 5thwith a two-run single. Ian Horne had two sacrifice flies and a run scoring double to rack up three RBI in the game. Taking the loss for the Axemen was Matt Bradley

In Game 2, Chris Thomas continued the Reds’ trend of excellent pitching performances firing five innings of two-hit, shutout baseball. Jake Cook led the Reds offensively with two singles going 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Mike Washburn added a bases clearing double in the 4thinning and finished 1 for 4 with 3 RBI in game 2. Wes Harding, Colton Meagher, and Tiernan MacDonald each picked up two hits for the Axemen, most of which came in the 6thand 7thinning as the Axemen staged a late comeback attempt picking up 4 runs in the 7thinning. Greg Mitchell took the Loss for the Axemen. 

UNB take a place in the top bracket at the Canadian University World Series in Ottawa October 18-21 playing Concordia University game 1 on Thursday at 3:00PM, Saint Mary’s University at 4:00PM on Friday, and a rematch with Acadia at 10:00AM on Saturday. All games are being played at Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton Park, the former home of the Ottawa Lynx and current home of the Ottawa Champions of the Can-Am League.
