Two one-run games that were decided in the final inning and a potential season-ending injury highlighted an action-packed first day at the Canadian University World Series this Thursday.
Acadia was defeated by defending champion McGill 12-1 in the opening game. McGill's Troy Sheppard knocked in three runs and starter Zach Finkelstein struck out six over four innings for the win. Jake McKinnon was 3 for 3 on the night for Acadia in the losing effort.
In the second game of the day, the University of New Brunswick rallied late but was unable to come back against the Concordia Stingers, dropping their first game 7-6. Starter J. Morgan pitched 6 innings, surrendering 3 earned runs and walking 10 batters for the win while Ortiz Prefontaine came on to salvage the game in the seventh with the save. Concordia's SS Kyle Hazel knocked in 3 runs including a double. UNB catcher Ryan Van Snick was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs, while starter Colby Lyle took the loss, surrendering 2 earned runs and striking out 5 over 5 innings.
In the final game of the day, host Carleton rode a no-hitter behind veteran starter Braden McGinnis until the 7th inning. Carleton's ace Derek Harkin was called in relief but left before throwing a pitch with an arm injury. Troy Clarke threw four pitches for the strikeout and the save. Saint Mary's starter Cody Pick surrendered 8 hits over 6 innings but only surrendered 1 earned run in the loss.
