PENALIZED SIX LOSSES AND PLAYOFF DISQUALIFICATION
By CCBA Staff
OTTAWA (Oct.1.2017)--
After an appeals committee settled the matter last Thursday, the Université de Montréal Baseball Club was officially penalized by the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association to six forfeit losses and ineligibility for playoff competition.
The decision came after an appeal by U de M largely on constitutional grounds that, in the end, did not persuade the committee.
An allegation that the U de Montréal illegally fielded a former professional baseball player was ruled to be unfounded as the player in question had obtained amateur status before play (though this documentation had also not been submitted to the league in a timely manner).
The Executive, a special committee, and finally an appeals committee found that U de Montréal fielded ineligible players in four of their games and did not file an eligibility certificate in time to stave off further sanctions after missing a second deadline.
U de Montréal was cooperative during the investigation and the team's own self-disclosure, which prompted the investigation, was noted by the league. No fines were levied against the team.
