Stars Sweep Weekday Series Over Crush with 10-5 win
Date: Jul 9, 2018
The Crush just seem to have the Cobras number this week as they swept the rain shortened weekday series with a quality win Friday night.
The game started off with the Cobras scoring three runs in the first two innings by a sacrifice fly in the first from Austin Peay commit, Ryan Kouba, a fielder’s choice by Logan Berlof, and a run scoring double by Ryan Kouba scoring Southwest Tennessee community college’s Barrone Porter in the second. The Crush countered that in the fifth inning by scoring three runs of their own on a run scoring walk, a wild pitch, and a passed ball. However, the Cobras came right back and scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a bases loaded wild pitch. In the top of the seventh, the Crush tied up the game off the bat of Drury’s Austin Wood with a single scoring Ross Indlecoffer who had singled to lead off the inning.
The score stayed tied until the top of the ninth as the Cobras sent Southwest Baptist’s Quinn Appletoft to the mound. This was an all too familiar situation as the Crush scored three runs off Appletoft on Monday night to win that game via walk off. The Cobras did not help themselves as they allowed the first runner on via error by the second baseman. After a sac bunt and a 6-3 putout, Appletoft was one out away from gaining a save. It was not meant to be as Austin Wood single and scored Indlecoffer from second base. Caleb Stull walked to put runners on first and second with two outs as Cairn University’s Brian Amantia stepped to the plate. Amantia wasted no time as he hit the first pitch for a double plating Austin Wood. The Crush tried to add one more run on the play, but Stull was thrown out at the plate by Logan Berlof with an assist from Missouri State’s Jordan Fitzpatrick.
As we headed into the bottom of the ninth, the Cobras had their 2-3-4 hitters due up to try and get the runs back. However, Southwest Baptist’s Corey Dudley wouldn’t let that happen as he sent the Cobras hitters down in order to secure the win.
The win was Dudley’s first on the summer as he continues to be stellar out of the pen. Dudley now sports a 0.93 era in 9.2 innings. With the loss, Appletoft falls to 1-3 on the summer.
Offensively, the Cobras out hit the Wild 9-6 with Logan Berlof leading the way going 2-4 with 1 run, 1 RBI, and 1 double. The Crush were led by Austin Wood as he went 2-4 on the night with 1 run and 1 RBI.
The Cobras fall to third place with an overall record of 6-7-2 while the Crush jump into second place with the win and now sit at 7-8.
