Alameda drops another nail biter to Menlo Park

Date:  Source: Alameda Merchants

The Menlo Park Legends found themselves behind once again - this time in game 2 of a four game seires vs. the Alameda Merchants. The Legends used timely hitting to score runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings to pull out another close game over Alameda - this time by the score of 4-3.

The Merchants got on the board first in the 2nd inning. Lead off batter Dakota Conners (CSUEB), took advantage of an error by the Menlo Park shortstop to get to 2nd base. Jacob Grijalva (Hawaii-Hilo) promptly drove him in with an RBI single to give the Merchants an early 1-0 lead.

After Menlo Park came back with a run in the top of the 4th, the Merchants answered right back. Conners led the inning off with a single, then advanced to 2nd on a balk by the Menlo Park pitcher. Once again, the Merchants found themselves with a runner in scoring position with nobody out and they were able to capitalize once again. Xavier Freeman (Seminole State) moved Conners to 3rd on a fielder's choice. Grijalva stepped to the plate once again and did exactly what he did in the 2nd inning - drove Conners in with an RBI single to left. The Merchants found themselves up 2-1 after 4 innings.

Overall, Alameda starter James McReynolds (Indiana Tech) pitched well - he only surrendered 2 earned runs over 6 innings pitched. He only walked two batters and struck out seven. The Legends just happen to come throught with timely hitting when they had runners on base in scoring position. When McReynolds came out at the end of the 6th inning, he found himself down 3-2. Marcus Williams surrendered one more run in two innings of relief to make the score 4-2.

In the 8th, the Merchants tried to mount a comeback to hopefully make up for the miscues of the previous game - where the Merchants gave up 4 unearned runs in the 9th inning and lost 7-6. Ty Koehring (Indiana Tech) started the inning off with a walk. After a strike out, Dakota Conners also drew a walk to put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. After a walk and a wild pitch, Conners crossed the plate to make the score 4-3.

The Menlo Park relief pitcher threw a clean ninth inning and the Merchants found themselves on the short end of the stick once again - losting game two of the series 4-3. Grijalva finished the day 2 for 3 with 2 RBI. Conners was 1 for 3 with two runs scored.

The third game of the series will be Friday at 5:00 pm at Canada College. The Seals will be playing a split squad game in Palm Springs that same day against the Palm Springs Power.
