Merchants beat Rockhounds in walkoff

After the Merchants/Seals split squad had beat the West Coast Kings yesterday 4-3, Alameda faced off with the Rally Factory Rockhounds at the College of Alameda. In a game that was tight the entire way, the Merchants came away with their first walkoff win of the summer.

The Merchants capitalized on their chances early, as a walk, error and a RBI single by Marcus Williams put them up 1-0 in the first inning. A sacrifice fly by Drew Mount in the 2nd pushed the score to 2-0.

From there, Moises Lopez (Laney JC) took the mound and was stellar through the first 5 innings - scattering a few hits and not surrendering a run while striking out 6.

The Rockhounds came back in the 6th with a solo home run and a few extra base hits to take a 3-2 lead. The Merchants added a run in the 7th to tie the score at 3. Gunnar David held the fort down for the Merchants. He pitched well in relief and held the Rockhounds scoreless over the next two innings.

The score was still tied 3-3 going into the bottom of the 9th. Dakota Conners led off with a single to get things started. After the Rockhounds gave up a walk, Jesse Medrano was hit by a pitch to load the bases. That set the stage for Xavier Freeman (Seminole State). The Merchant first baseman did not dissappoint, as he hit a rocket that the Rockhound's shortstop couldn't handle. Conners came in on the play to score the game winner!!! Merchants took this one 4-3.

Alameda will split squad this weekend - half of the team traveling to Santa Maria to play the home town Packers and the other half heading up to Aubrun to play the Wildcats - an old Golden State Collegiate Baseball League foe of the Merchants.
