Merchants drop game 2 of GFI to Burnaby Bulldogs
Date: Jun 22, 2017
The Merchants split their opening weekend series against a California Collegiate League foe - the Healdsburg Prune Packers.
After getting their feet wet and stumbling through the first game that they lost 13-3, they came back strong to win game two 4-3.
Marcus Williams (CSU East Bay), Dakota Conners (CSU East Bay) and Michael Jenkerson (Hawaii-Hilo) all played OUTSTANDING defense for the Merchants - Jenkerson and Williams had diving plays in CF and at 3rd base to preserve the Merchants lead.
The Merchants found themselves down 2-1 early in game two, but a DEEP 3 run HR to straight away center by JP Soriano (Seminole State) put the Merchants up 4-2 in the 4th.
James McReynolds (Indiana Tech) had a strong start for the Merchants - going 4.1 innings and giving up only 2 runs.
Nabeeh Blackburn (Adams State) came in and handcuffed the Prune Packer hitters for the next 3.2 innings - not surrendering a run and keeping the score at 4-2.
Blaze Hastings (Seminole State) came in for the Merchants and shut the door with a two inning save. Hastings was dominant - striking out four Prune Packers along the way to preserve the 4-3 win.
Next game for the Merchants is this Saturday, June 4th against the Fresno Athletics at 6:00 at the College of Alameda.
