Hutchinson, Kan. -- The Liberal (Kan.) BeeJays built a big cushion and then held on for an 8-4 win over the Cheney Diamond Dawgs at the NBC World Series last night (July 31) at Hobart-Detter Field in Hutchinson, Kan.
The BeeJays broke on top with a run in the third and then added two more in the fifth.
After Liberal scored again in the seventh to jump ahead by four runs, the Diamond Dawgs got on the board in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Ryan Scott.
The ninth inning saw the BeeJays break things open, with a two-run single from Zach Yorke capping a four-run inning to build the lead to 8-1.
Lenny Ashby hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth for the Diamond Dawgs to make things closer, but that's all they could muster as the BeeJays held on for the win.
Cooper Hext had three hits and scored three runs for the BeeJays, while Gavin Brzozowski doubled and had three RBIs.
Ashby and George Specht each had three hits for the Diamond Dawgs.
Paul Bonzagni was brilliant for the BeeJays, blanking the Diamond Dawgs and striking out six during his six innings on the mound.
Next up for Cheney is a matchup with the Mansfield (Texas) TBT Ballers tomorrow afternoon (Aug. 2) at 3 pm at Eck Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University.
