Kingman, Kan. -- The Derby Twins took the opening game 5-3, but the Kingman Islanders rebounded to capture the second tilt 7-5 in a twinbill last night (July 20) at Kingman Riverside Park.
The Twins used the long ball to take command of the first matchup, with Brett Burrell hitting a solo shot and Nick Costello launching a two-run blast in the first inning for an early three-run advantage.
After the Twins added single tallies in the second and third innings, the Islanders fought back with two runs in the bottom of the third and then got a solo homer from Brendan McBeth in the fourth to cut the deficit to two runs.
That would be all the Islanders could muster though, as the bullpen combination of Justin Durnil and Coleson Syring shut things down over the next three innings.
Durnil pitched two scoreless frames, with Syring striking out two in a scoreless seventh inning.
Tanner Warady started for Derby (26-13) and went four innings, giving up one earned run along with six strikeouts to be credited with the first game victory.
Karson Klima went 2-of-2 with an RBI in the opening game for the Twins.
The Islanders (18-20) then used a six-run sixth inning to overcome a 3-1 deficit in the nightcap to salvage the doubleheader split.
