Oswego will return home to the Campus Center Ice Arena this weekend after their trip to Rochester Hills, Michigan. On Friday evening the Lakers will take on SUNY Cortland (0-6-0, 0-3-0) at 8:00 PM and on Sunday afternoon Oswego will host Cornell University (5-3-0, 1-0-0) at 2:00 PM.
Oswego is coming off a tough weekend on the road where they dropped 2 games to Oakland University (5-1-0). Oakland has put together a very impressive start to their season winning 5 of their first 6 games including a win against #17 ranked Robert Morris Illinois.
On Friday evening the Golden Grizzlies wasted no time getting on the board scoring 1:53 into the contest. Oakland added 2 more in the second before Oswego’s Braydon Deming got the Lakers on the board 6 minutes into the third period. Oswego generated some quality chances to mount a comeback in this game– putting up 38 shots on net but could not seem to get more than 1 by Oakland’s Joshua Pack who had a stellar weekend in net (2-0, .973 Save %). Oakland would go on to win game 1 of the weekend by a score of 3-1. On the other side of the ice, Oswego’s Ryan Schirano made his debut for the Lakers in goal stopping 39 of 42 Oakland shots.
On Saturday evening it was much of the same story as Oakland would again jump out to an early lead scoring twice in the game’s first 7 minutes. From there the Golden Grizzles never looked back winning game 2 of the weekend 6-1. Again, Oswego’s Braydon Deming notched the only Laker goal.
Friday night's game at the Campus Center against SUNY Cortland will be Oswego’s 3rd conference game of the season. They currently sit in 5th place in the NECHL standings after splitting with Rutgers University on October 4th & 5th. Last season, Oswego took both games from the Red Dragons – a 5-3 win on the road and a 3-1 win at the Campus Center.
On Sunday afternoon Oswego will take on the Cornell University Big Red, who currently sit one spot above Oswego in the NECHL standings after a 4-2 win against SUNY Cortland earlier this season in their lone conference game thus far. Cornell will take on the 2-time defending NECHL Champion University at Buffalo on Saturday at home before traveling out to Oswego on Sunday. The Lakers also took both games against the Big Red last season – a 6-1 win in their home opener and a 6-2 win in the final game before last year’s holiday break. Head Coach Chris Timmons discusses some takeaways after the team’s 2 losses against Oakland and the importance of the 2 upcoming games this weekend.
“We need to start taking advantage of ‘grade A’ scoring opportunities, making better decisions with the puck, and moving our feet without the puck. Those 3 things are what really cost us this past weekend” Timmons added “Our expectation is to come away with 6 points this weekend and get the confidence back in our play. If we jump on them early, stay sharp, and play a full 60 minutes in each of the 2 games I think we will like the results.”
As always, all home games are free for students and to the general public. This weekend’s games will also be streamed live on the team’s YouTube Channel (@Oswego State Lakers ACHA).
