The Lakers opened up their season at home beating the Slippery Rock University Pride (2-1-0) 6-4 on Friday night. Luke Myers opened up the scoring just 5 minutes into the 2019-20 season after taking a nice pass from Theo Cup, streaking down the wing, and then cutting across the front of the net and stuffing the puck home to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. Chase Nies extended the Lakers lead just over a minute and a half later with helpers from Joe Marszalek and Martin Simanek. However, SRU’s Jamie Mauro would answer just before the halfway point of the 1st period. Mike Lemieux would give Oswego their 2-goal lead back with just over 7 minutes to play in the first. First year Laker, Trevor Jubran, would add an assist on Oswego's 3rd goal.
Again, SRU would answer in the 2nd cutting the deficit to 1 goal. But again, the Lakers would punch back. Chase Nies and Mike Lemiuex would each get their second tallies of the night to extend the Oswego lead to 5-2 after 2 periods. In the third, the Pride again chipped away at the Oswego lead – managing to cut the lead to 5-4 with 8 minutes to play. However, Oswego’s Shawn O’Neill, who recently made the transition to forward for his senior year campaign, would ice the Pride comeback scoring the empty netter with 23 seconds to play in the game to secure the 6-4 win. Oswego's Alex Gallose turned aside 31 of 35 shots in net.
On Saturday afternoon, these 2 teams went at it again. This time, the Pride would jump out to an early lead and never look back. SRU scored 3 times in the 1st, added another in the middle period, and then put away 3 more goals in the 3rd beating Oswego 7-2 in the second game of the weekend. CJ Walsh and Andrew Cardi scored for Oswego – both goals coming on the powerplay. SRU’s Jamie Mauro, who led the nation in scoring last year, would tally 3 more points on Saturday giving him 5 points (2-3-5) on the weekend.
This upcoming weekend, Oswego will kick off NECHL Conference play at they welcome Rutgers University (1-2-0, 0-2-0) to the Campus Center Arena for a 2 game set. Customarily, NECHL teams meet twice each season – one game played at home and one game played on the road. However, with the distance between these 2 schools Oswego and Rutgers alternate hosting 2 game weekends every other year. Last season when Oswego traveled down to Rutgers the Lakers took 4 of a possible 6 points losing to the Ice Knights 5-4 in a shootout and then beating Rutgers 4-0 the following day.
Friday night’s contest will get underway at 8:00 PM. On Saturday afternoon Oswego will recognize Breast Cancer Awareness month as they host “Pink the Rink”. The Lakers will sport custom pink jerseys in an effort to raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer research. Oswego will also hold a jersey raffle and will be selling schedule posters with the proceeds benefiting the cause. Saturday’s game against Rutgers will get underway at 2:30 PM.
All home games are free to the public and the games can also be seen live streaming on the team’s YouTube page.
