Another One Slips Away

Date:  Source: Sarnia Pacers

The Pacers let a game slip out of their hands last evening in Wallaceburg.  Although the Red Devils opened the scoring much to the delight of the home team crowd, Sarnia battled back twice in the period and the teams went to their respective dressing rooms tied at two each after an opening ceremony that included a moment of silence in memory of those young people who committed suicide in the past year. To show their support, the players wore orange bands around their arms while staff were seen sporting orange ribbons on their shirts.

After the opening 20 minutes of play, Sarnia seemed to take control of the game - but not to the extent of blowing the game wide open. Giving the Pacers their first lead of the game just 59 seconds into the 2nd period was TJ Mara and it would be Mara who scored the only other goal of this period and Sarnia took a two goal lead at the end of the second stanza.

Sarnia increased their lead to three early in the third on a Chad Zonneville marker and held onto that lead until the Red Devils began their comeback with under four minutes to go in the third. Wallaceburg notched the game at five each after calling a time out and then pulling their goalie for an extra attacker.

After a short intermission, a 10 minute OT took place and again, Sarnia regained the lead,  bulging the twine twice to take a 7-5 lead.  However, a very determined Red Devils team answered back with three of their own and then held on for the win.

Scoring the rest of the goals for Sarnia were Mitch Doughty, Kevin Conroy, Dan Charlton and a hat trick for TJ Mara.  Taking the loss in goal for the Pacers (and playing an outstanding game) was Justin Matthews who faced in excess of 60 shots.  MVP for Sarnia was Brandan Burr.

The Pacers will now host the Six Nations Rebels on Friday May 27th - an 8 pm start.  The following evening the Orangeville Northmen pay a visit to the Clearwater Arena for a 7 pm game.
