2012 Team Banquet
Date: Aug 3, 2012
Sarnia's two "B" teams took to the floor at Sarnia Arena on Saturday afternoon where the senior Beavers "schooled" the junior Pacers in more ways than one.
On this sunny Saturday afternoon, two of Sarnia’s lacrosse teams took to the floor at the Sarnia Arena. Being awarded home team status were the Jr. B Pacers who found themselves schooled by the older, bigger & more experienced Sr. B Beavers team.
The Pacers opened the scoring just 12 seconds in on an unassisted marked by TJ Mara. It would prove to be the only time in the game that the junior club would hold the lead. The Beavers scored four times on Pacers goaltender Justin Matthews, taking a three goal lead into the dressing room after 20 minutes of play.
In the second stanza Kevin Fines – an NLLer – put on a clinic of scoring, adding two more to the single he notched in the first period and a few assists too. Fines was not the only NLLer playing for the Beavers, he was joined by Michael Fleming who once again demonstrated his run & shoot skill that many Sarnia lacrosse fans saw often when he was a Pacer. The juniors notched a couple goals themselves lighting the lamp on Dan Gawne and Connor Smith markers and got to within one. Just near the 10 minute mark, the Pacers made a goaltender change to Ian Ferguson who would be tagged with the “loss” for this game. After 40 minutes of play the Beavers held a 7-3 lead.
At this point, neither club had taken too much in the way of penalties – 4 minors for the Pacers and 6 minors for the Beavers and it continued to be the same in the 3rd period. Though both clubs played with intensity, neither side let tempers boil over into anything. Given the same play against another team, retaliation would be been swift and often.
Also notching a hat trick was Brian Quinn who did his damage in a three minute span early in the third period. The young Pacer players “assigned” to Brian found it difficult to move him – just like many a young junior player did back in Brian’s junior playing days. The Beavers didn’t just put goals up on the scoreboard against their younger counterparts, they also gave instruction. They doled out tips to the Pacer players in both the offensive and defensive end.
By the time the game ended, the Beavers put up 14-4 score but it really was a win-win scenario in this case.
About 200 spectators took in the game where admission was free but donations of dry or canned goods were requested. They are to be donated to the Inn of the Good Shepherd. With such a good turnout, the team’s portion of the 50/50 monies raised is to be donated to the St. Clair Child & Youth at a home game later in the season.
