2012 Team Banquet
Date: Aug 3, 2012
By the time the game ended on Sunday afternoon Pacer players were hurting - both those who played the game and those who didn't ...
Sarnia was without some of their big guns, mostly due to injuries and then took a whipping on the floor Sunday afternoon at the Clearwater Arena. The Pacers were without the services of a few players due to injuries and as well as no longer having the services of high scoring Jimmy Purves as he has re-joined the Jr A Six Nations Arrows - a team for whom he played last season. Without these veterans, the fans at the game saw a rather young and somewhat inexperience group of Pacers take on the 4-2-1 Elora Mohawks - a very physical team.
The Mohawks went up 5-0 with two of the goals while playing short-handed and a power play goal as well before the Pacers' Kevin Conroy potted a power play goal and gave the home town fans something to cheer.
In the second stanza, Elora netted another three goals before Sarnia went on a bit of a run themselves and got to within three - but that was as close as they would get. Lighting the lamp for the Pacers this period were Joe McKelvie, Mitch Doughty, TJ Mara with Kevin Conroy picking up his second of the game. Not to be outdone, Elora responded with two of their own and took a 10-5 lead into the dressing room. They would also begin the third with a power play opportunity as Conroy was called for interference with two ticks left on the clock.
The third period saw more of the same - Elora scoring almost at will and after potting two quick goals before the period was 2 minutes old, the Pacers switched goaltenders from Justin Matthews (who took the loss in net) to Ian Ferguson. The final score of 17-8 was somewhat reflected in the total shots which also favoured the Mohawks -- 55-40 as did the specialty team numbers where Elora was 4 for 6 with the man advantage AND bulged the twine twice while short-handed.
The Pacers are on the road for their next three games -- in Windsor on the Thursday the 19th @ 8pm, in Owen Sound on Sunday the 22nd @ 7pm and then a short jaunt down highway 40 to Wallaceburg on Wednesday the 25th for an 7:30 game against the Red Devils. Their next home game is Friday the 27th, an 8 pm start when we host the Six Nations Rebels. There are to be some extra activities during that game, so why not plan on attending.
