EELS ELITE OPENING WEEKEND RECAP

Date:  Source: EJHLS Florida Eels

The Florida Eels Elite team had its season opener this past weekend. They faced off against the Atlanta Knights in two home games. It has been three seasons ago that we last seen the Atlanta Knights travel to the Fort Myers Skatium to play against the Eels. This was a pretty exciting weekend as it was the season opener for the Eels and the Eels fan base was there in large numbers to support their players.

In game one, the Eels took a two-goal lead but Atlanta surprised the Eels by storming back with a 4-3 victory. It was the first time many of the Elite team got to officially play with one another. We had two weeks of training but they are still working on the chemistry, lines systems etc. We were disappointed with the result but not at all discouraged or upset with the players GM Scarpaci said. It takes time to build teams and we are doing things the right way. We have a lot of talent and we are very pleased with who we have on this team.

In game two the Eels came out on fire. It was more of what we had seen over the past 14 days. The fore-check looked better, the back checking was more consistent and the guys seemed to have gotten the jitters out of them. Here the Eels offense stepped things up a notch and put 4 goals passed the Atlanta net minder and let in only one for a 4-1 win. The boys felt good after this one. Big smiles and camaraderie was over flowing.

The Eels also played an exhibition game on Monday against the ACHA University of Tampa Div. 3 squad. The Eels offense again exploded for 6 goals and allowed 3 against. You can see in this game as in the second game vs. Atlanta the chemistry was so much better.

Overall, there was a very balanced scoring amongst the personnel. There were 8 different players who scored and 12 different guys who earned assist over the weekend.

Most notably, Jonathan Carlson was the team leader with 5 goals and 2 assist. Newcomer Cory Richardson notched 1 goal and 2 assist for a high from the blue liners. Rookie Jeff O'Dea got his first point as junior player with one assist. We expect to be seeing his name quite a bit.

The fans were there all weekend eager to see the new players and veterans alike. They watched some great hockey for only being the first week of games. The rink was very lively as we had in excess of 500 fans throughout  the weekend to support our guys.
