SPRINGFIELD, Oh. - This summer's Champion City Kings roster will feature four players that currently compete at area schools. Luke Mamer from Wright State University, Nick Weybright from the University of Dayton, Jaden Cleland from Cedarville University, and Zac Wilson from Wittenburg University have all signed to play this summer.
Mamer, a Springfield native and Kenton Ridge graduate, is a junior pitcher for the Raiders. He has experience as a starter and a reliever.
"Luke adds a lot of versatility to our pitching staff," said Kings manager Brett Neffendorf. "With his plus off-speed pitches and his ability to adjust from being either a starter or a reliever, you will see Luke pitch in a lot of roles for us this summer."
Weybright, a sophomore from Indianapolis, Ind., made the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team a year ago after a strong freshman campaign for the Flyers.
"Nick is a big, physical back-end bullpen arm that will fit perfectly into the closer role for us," Neffendorf said. "If there's a save opportunity, Nick will be the guy for it."
Cleland, another Springfield native, played for Northwestern High School and is now off to a good start in his freshman year at Cedarville. Cleland is hitting .328 through 22 games for the Yellow Jackets.
"Jaden is everything you want in a catcher, said Neffendorf. "Natural leadership skills, very good catch-and-throw guy and will hit for average."
Wilson, a junior from Eaton, Oh., started all 39 games last season as a sophomore and stole 26 bases on as many attempts, which was the second-most in school history, and was named Honorable Mention All-NCAC.
"Zac is going to be very exciting to watch play," said Neffendorf. "He is extremely athletic, can play both middle infield spots and will fly around the bags."
The Kings open the 2014 season at home against the Chillicothe Paints on Wednesday, May 28 at 7:05 p.m.
