SPRINGFIELD, Oh. - Three Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers will suit up for the Champion City Kings this summer. Pitcher Ryan Thurston, infielder Leiff Clarkson, and outfielder Trevor Lowe have all been signed by Kings manager Brett Neffenforf.
Thurston, a left-handed pitcher from Madison, Ind., is currently in his freshman season with the Hilltoppers and has already appeared in seven games out of the bullpen.
"Ryan is a three-pitch left hander with very good command," said Neffendorf. "He controls the running game well and will compete to be in our rotation." Clarkson is a redshirt freshman from Union, Ky. He has already played in 17 games this season for Western Kentucky, racking up an early .324 batting average.
Last summer, Clarkson hit .333 in 39 games for the Northwest Indiana Oilmen of the Midwest Collegiate League.
"Leiff will make an impact right away for us as a rangy middle infielder," Neffendorf said. "He can really run the bases and fit right into our style of pressure offense."
Lowe, a sophomore from Bowling Green, Ky., was able to take over the starting center field role last Spring for the Hilltoppers and continues in that role this year.
Neffendorf describes Lowe "as a two-way guy with power at the plate and a strong arm on the mound. He will be a huge plus for us as a centerfielder and relief arm."
The Kings open the 2014 season at home against the Chillicothe Paints on Wednesday, May 28 at 7:05 p.m.
