Mystic Stops Skid, Wins at Newport

Date:  Source: NECBL Newport Gulls

It was a beautiful evening for baseball at Cardines Field as the Newport Gulls hosted the Mystic Schooners to start off the last week before the All Star break this weekend. Cade O’Leary (Florida State) gets the start for the Gulls as Nick Coniglio gets the start for the Schooners.

Mystic jumped on O’Leary in the first inning with a pair of doubles from Maddix Dalena and Davis Johnson to give the Schooners the early lead. After a few doubles, Mystic capitalized off of a few errors from the Newport defense and put pressure on the Gulls right off the bat as they put up a crooked number in the first inning.

O’Leary and the Gulls defense got out of the first inning with a nice double play and left Mystic loaded on the bases. Schooners still put a lot of pressure on Newport early on in this game.

Starting All Star outfielder Michael Gupton (Memphis) showed his power and started the scoring for Newport with a high fly that hit the leaves of the tree in left field and was called a home run to get some momentum back in the first inning.

O’Leary went through the second inning and settled in on the mound and kept Mystic off the board.

Christian Scanlon added on to Mystics lead with a solo homerun in the top of the third.

O’Leary could only get through 2 innings as Casen Murphy (Louisville) was the first out of the pen for Newport as he took over in the third inning.

Gulls manager Mike Coombs left this game early as he was ejected in the top of third arguing a check swing call.

Another Gulls double play got Newport out of the third inning after the chaotic first half of the third inning.

Casen Murphy (Louisville) gets the Gulls first 1,2,3 inning in the top of the 4th with a quick and easy outing.

Gulls played their own home run derby at Cardines tonight as Matt Ossenfort (Michigan) got onto the board for the Gulls with his first homerun of the summer as he blasted a solo shot into deep right center field in the bottom of the fourth inning which cut Mystics lead down to four at this part of the game.

Reese Crochet was the first out of the pen for the Mystic Schooners in relief for Coniglio and shut down the Gulls offense after the homerun by Ossenfort.

Murphy with another clean inning for the Gulls in the 5th inning as he shut down Mystic for another inning.

Blake Julius (Oklahoma State) takes over the mound for Newport in the 6th inning. Julius comes in and shuts down the Mystic hitters with a 1,2,3 inning.

Anthony Belisario smashed a grand slam for Mystic in the 7th inning which gave the Schooners an 11-2 lead during the 7th inning.

John Downing (Seton Hall) on the mound for the Gulls in the 8th inning.

Michael Gupton (Memphis) gets the Gulls out of the 8th inning on defense with a nice sliding grab in the outfield.

Randy Seymour (Michigan State) with a 2 RBI double in the bottom of the 8th to grab a few more runs for the Gulls. Matt Ossenfort (Michigan) drove in Seymour to get an RBI single for Newport.

Downing with a three up and three down 9th inning for Newport.

The Newport Gulls fall to the Mystic Schooners 11-5 on this Monday night.

The Gulls will travel to Holyoke to face the Valley Blue Sox on Tuesday, July 15th and then will be back at Cardines Field to host the Ocean State Waves for another battle in the Pell Bridge Series on Wednesday, July 16th at 6:35 pm. Both of these games can be found and will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
