North Adams, Mystic Earn Wins Behind Big Innings

North Adams SteepleCats vs. Vermont Mountaineers

Montpelier, VT- The Mountaineers hosted the SteepleCats for a wild Monday night matchup, with lead changes and rallies galore! 

 

In the top of the fourth, Gabriel Natividad (Winthrop) got things started with an RBI single to put North Adams on top 1-0. The next inning, Michael Toth (UMass Amherst) led off with an RBI double to increase the SteepleCats’ lead to 2-0. Damian Rodriguez (Iona) followed up by driving in Toth on a single, making the lead 3-0. Rodriguez was then able to cross the plate on a failed pickoff attempt to first, scoring run number four for North Adams and capping off the rally. 

 

The game remained 4-0 until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Elliot Miles (UMass Boston) stepped up to the plate with the bases juiced and delivered, hitting a grand slam to tie the game up at 4-4, showing fight for the Mountaineers. The next inning, Joey Pagano (St. Joseph's) hit a single to drive in the go-ahead run for Vermont, putting them up 5-4 going into the ninth. 

 

The top of the ninth inning is when North Adams would blow the game open. It all started when Robert Stang (Dayton) scored on a wild pitch, tying the game 5-5. Damian Rodriguez (Iona) kept his monster performance going with a two-RBI single, driving in the go-ahead run along with an insurance run to put the Cats up 7-5. Cuyler Baxter (Wake Forest) got in on the action, driving in another two runs with a single, finishing off an amazing rally for the SteepleCats. 

 

Both teams are back in action tomorrow, with Vermont heading to Lynn, MA for a doubleheader against the Navigators. Meanwhile, North Adams heads to Keene, NH to take on the SwampBats.

Mystic Schooners vs. Newport Gulls

Final Score: Mystic 11, Newport 5

 

Newport, RI – The Mystic Schooners used two big innings to defeat the South Division leading Newport Gulls 11-5. 

 

Mystic got the scoring rolling early with four runs in the top of the first. Jack Harley (Stetson) and Davis Johnson (Notre Dame) had RBI singles in the inning, with two errors by the Gulls' defense also helping the Schooners. Michael Gupton (Memphis) responded in the bottom of the frame with a solo shot to bring the score to 4-1. 

 

Christian Scanlon (Merrimack) went deep for the Schooners in the fifth, followed by a bases-loaded walk to put Mystic ahead 6-1. Newport’s Matt Ossenfort (Michigan) blasted a solo home run in the fourth, cutting Mystic’s lead to four, but the Gulls could not string together a rally as the score remained 6-2.

 

The Schooners put up a five-piece in the seventh, as an Anthony Belisario (UConn) grand slam capped off the big inning, putting a stamp on the game. Newport managed three runs in the eighth, but could not catch up as they ultimately fell 11-5. 

 

The Schooners grab a much-needed win, ending a six-game skid and improving to 14-19. They take on the Danbury Westerners on Wednesday, while the Gulls fall to 20-12, and travel to take on the Valley Blue Sox at 6:35 pm.
