LIMA LOCOS  5  FLAG CITY SLUGGERS  4  -  FINAL  

SIMMONS FIELD - The Lima Locos overcame early misfortune coming back to walk it off on the Flag City Sluggers 5-4 on Sunday at Simmons Field.

 

The Locos win the series after dropping the first game pf the series. Lima is the proud owner the best record in the GLSCL (18-8) remaining atop of the GLSCL North Division standings.

 

Lima starting pitcher Taylor Echols (Miami University) left the game with an injury just four batters into the game.

 

The Sluggers (13-12) took advantage of the Locos misfortune scoring four runs in that opening inning. After the first two batters reached base, Harrison Engskov (Arkansas State transfer) drove in Carter Mottice (Bowling Green State) on a sacrifice fly.

 

Landon Vandegrift (University of Akron) replaced Echols on the mound for the Locos. He gave up an RBI-groundout by Drew Stechschulte (Ohio Northern) allowing Brayden Curlis (Bowling Green State) to score on the play. Trey Gardner (Three Rivers CC) capped off the inning with a two-run single bringing home Stechschulte and Tanner Powell (Loyola University commit).

 

The Locos chipped away throughout the game scoring single runs in five different innings.

 

Lima tied the game 4-4 in eighth inning when Cole Crafton (University of Louisville) raced home from third base on a wild pitch.

 

The Locos completed the comeback in the ninth when Charlie Vercruysse (Purdue University commit) reached base on a one-out triple. Payton Ebbing (Kent State) became the hero was he lifted the sacrifice fly to center field allowing Vercruysse to tag up and score the winning run.

Vercruysse was another offensive hero going 3-for-4 with that triple and two runs scored.

 

Vandergrift held it together on the mound for the Locos after the Echols that rough first inning. He went four and 2/3 innings while the Locos got the train back on the tracks.

 

Johnathon Allen (University of Akron) was even better pitching four shutout innings closing it out earning his first win of the season. Allen gave up just two hits while striking out two batters. 

 

After a day off on Monday, the Locos will play back-to-back double headers on Tuesday and Wednesday versus the Xenia Scouts. Meanwhile the Sluggers will being hosting a three-game series at home beginning Tuesday against the Muskegon Clippers.

 

 

XENIA SCOUTS  9  GRAND LAKE MARINERS  6  -  FINAL

GRADY’S FIELD - The Xenia Scouts complete a three-game sweep of the Grand Lake Mariners with a 9-6 win Sunday on Grady’s Field at Browne Stadium.

 

The Scouts (17-9) have won seven out its last eight games and are just one game behind the Lima Locos for the best overall record in the GLSCL.

 

The Mariners (8-18) are currently on the other end of the spectrum dropping its sixth straight game.

 

Oliver Adams (North Greenville), who got over a tough start allowing two runs in the first inning, earned his second victory of the season. Adams went seven innings not allowing a hit after the first inning. He retired 11 straight batters at one point with that streak being snapped when Xenia allowed a base runner on an error.

 

The Scouts overcame the early 2-0 deficit scoring three times in the fourth inning without the benefit of a hit. The Mariners didn’t help its cause committing two of its five error of the game in the inning.

 

Xenia left fielder Ayden Alsobrooks (Incarnate Word), who went 3-for-5 at the plate, helped extend the Scouts lead to 7-2 with a two-run double in the sixth inning.

 

Grand Lake rallied in the eighth inning scoring four times and cutting the deficit to 7-6. 

 

The Mariners loaded the bases when Jacob Loving (Palomar College) scored from third base on a passed ball. Jacob Lopez (University of Scranton transfer) smacked a two-run single allowing A.J. Klubeck (Palomar College) and Sammy Besztery (University of Rochester) to both cross the plate. Brandon Lang (Southwestern University) delivered an RBI-single down the right field line driving home Sam Lapping (Whitman College). 

 

Grand Lake had the go ahead run at the plate before Xenia pitcher Danny Slaske (The Masters College) came in to get the final out of the eighth inning.

 

Xenia bounced back in the bottom of the inning when Johnathan Jackson (Harding University) came up with a clutch two-run base hit extending the lead back out to 9-6.

 

Slaske came back out to pitch the ninth inning for the Scouts retiring the side in order earning his second save of the season.

 

The Scouts now prepare for back-to-back double headers  on Tuesday and Wednesday against the Lima Locos. It will be a matchup of the two teams with the best records in the GLSCL.

 

The Mariners will lick it wounds and get back at it on Tuesday hosting the Southern Ohio Copperheads.

 

SOUTHERN OHIO COPPERHEADS  10  HAMILTON JOES  6 -  FINAL 

BOB WREN STADIUM - The Southern Ohio Copperheads take the weekend series with a 10-6 victory over the Hamilton Joes in front of its home fans Sunday at Bob Wren Stadium.

 

The Joes got off to a hot start scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.

 

The Copperheads answered scoring four runs each in the second and third inning taking an 8-3 advantage.

 

Ronnie Rowley (Hocking College) was one the heroes offensively for Southern Ohio. Rowley went 3-for-4 at the plate and was hit a pitch on two different occasions reaching base in five out his six plate appearances.

 

Tylan Graves (Southwest Tennessee CC) contributed three RBIs while going 2-for-5 at the plate.

 

Hamilton’s Jackson Wang (Wabash Valley) did his part to keep the Joes in the game. Wang was 2-for-3 with his second home run of the season. Wang scored two runs while driving in two RBIs, stole a base and reached on two walks.

 

The series win puts Southern Ohio (11-15) back in the playoff conversation. The Copperheads are now just two games in the loss column behind the Joes (14-13) for second place in the GLSCL South Division standings.

 

Next week Southern Ohio travels to Celina beginning a three-game series with the struggling Grand Lake Mariners. Hamilton will make the trip to Hillsdale College for a three-game set against the Michigan Monarchs.

 

 

MUSKEGON CLIPPERS  13  MICHIGAN MONARCHS  7  -  FINAL  

HILLSDALE COLLEGE - The Muskegon Clippers gained some bragging rights in the all-Michigan rivalry defeating the Michigan Monarchs 13-7 at Hillsdale College.

 

The Clippers (11-16) win the weekend series taking two out of three games evening up the season series at three game apiece.

 

Muskegon’s offense was powered by 13 hits with four different batters contributing multi-hit performances. The Clippers set a GLSCL single game season high for this year with three triples during the contest.

 

Jack Bakus (Lansing CC) was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Taylor Head (Chattanooga State Tech) scored three runs to go with his two hits on the night. Ashten Wong (LSU-Shreveport commit) and Davis Weeks (Michigan State) each contributed two hits and two runs scored.

 

Connor Freeman (St. Edwards University) got the start for Muskegon pitching six innings earning his first win of the season.

 

Winston Delp (Hillsdale College), pitching at his home field during spring, looked especially comfortable on the mound. Delp tossed two scoreless innings for the Clippers bridging the gap to the ninth inning.

 

The Monarchs (13-14) rallied in the ninth inning but still fell short. Manny Gutierrez (Henry Ford CC) doubled driving home Kopper Etheridge (Madonna University). Gutierrez came around to score on and RBI-single by Bren Wilkinson (Cal State Northridge transfer).

 

Lukas Brewer (Lansing CC) was able to get the final elusive out for the Clippers when he struck out Monarchs power hitter Kenny McKinley (Middle Tennessee State) ending the game.

 

Gutierrez and Wyatt Epple (Davenport University) each provided the Monarchs with three hits on the game.

 

The Clippers look to keep the momentum into next week traveling to Findlay taking on the Flag City Sluggers.

 

The Monarchs host the Hamilton Joes for a three-game series all played at Lenda and Glenda Hill Stadium on the campus of Hillsdale College.
