A Glance at the Week: Sanford RiverRats

Winter Garden, Fla. - Winter Garden snapped its six game losing streak and picked up its first win of the summer against Orlando after beating the Snappers 5-1 at home on Saturday.
It was the most crucial win of 2025 for the Squeeze as they picked up the victory against one of the league’s top teams with the playoff race heating up down the last stretch of the regular season.
“You know, we just played as a team,” said Javier Calzadilla (University of North Florida) after the game about how the Squeeze managed to defeat the current number three team in the FCSL. “We just scored when we needed to score and we had fun.”
Calzadlilla put together a solid night at the plate, going 1-3 with a hit and an RBI to help his team come out on top.
It looked like the Snappers were poised to sweep the series when they found momentum early. Julian Mercado (Stetson) took advantage of a wild pitch to put the visitors up 1-0 in the top of the second inning.
In typical Squeeze fashion, they would respond. In the fourth inning, a fielder’s choice allowed for Jordan Marlo (University of West Georgia) to round the bases at tie it at one apiece.
Things played out differently this time around for Winter Garden, as they held on to their momentum for the rest of the matchup. RBI singles from Sean Stafford (Folsom Lake) and Calzadilla tacked on three more runs and gave the hosts a 4-1 advantage after five innings.
The Squeeze’s defense did a great job of tightening up if and when the Snappers put runners on base. They did not commit any errors during the game.
Derek Lopez (2025 Daytona State) came home to score off of an outfield error to put the icing on the cake and the game out of reach.
Neither side would score any more runs foe the remainder of the contest as the Squeeze held on to win.
Winter Garden gets a rest day and will resume action when they kick off a four game series against Sanford on June 30 at home at Horizon High School at 6:30 p.m.
