Diamond Dawgs Take Game 2 Against Orlando In 8-7 Thriller
Date: Jul 2, 2025
SANFORD, Fla.- Throughout the 2025 season, the Florida Collegiate Summer League will honor two players at the conclusion of each week, an FCSL Player of the Week and an FCSL Pitcher of the Week. This week's honors represent performances from Monday, June 23 through Saturday, June 28. The weekly honors are selected via a vote of league coaches and officials.
One of the youngest players in the Florida League is this week's Player of the Week, as incoming freshman Blake Fields (Miami Dade) of the Orlando Snappers earns the accolade for the final full week of June. The First Academy graduate came up with one of the biggest hits of the season on Friday night, a mammoth two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the tenth to give Orlando a victory over Winter Garden.
On the week, Fields hit safely in all four of his appearances for the Snappers, including a pair of multi-hit performances. Fields is currently second in the Florida League with a .390 batting average, third in slugging with a .525 mark, and fourth in OPS at .998.
The final weekly awards of June were swept by the Orlando Snappers, as Joey Wittig (Louisiana Tech) earned Pitcher of the Week recognition. The righthander toed the rubber on Monday against the DeLand Suns, and was nearly unhittable. The South Carolina native struck out seven hitters across four innings of work, allowing just a sole hit. The Snappers would go on to win that contest at Melching Field by a score of 3-2.
In five outings this season, Wittig has yet to allow more than one earned run. The righty has allowed just nine total hits across his 14 innings of work, striking out 20 while walking just five. The Snappers are 4-1 in games pitched by Wittig, and are 3-0 when he pitches three or more innings.
Additionally, the Florida League will honor one player from each team that was not selected as Player or Pitcher of the Week.
