DeLand, FL- The DeLand Suns stepped out onto the field at Conrad Park and then went onto leave with not one, but two wins. The team won both games in its doubleheader against the Winter Park Dimond Dawgs.

The Suns took game one by the score of 4-3. After the game was delayed nearly two hours due to lightning in the area, the team quickly went to work and took an early lead thanks to an RBI single hit by Shane Thomas of Eastern Florida State in the bottom of the first.

The Dawgs would take the lead in the bottom half of that inning, but the Suns wouldn’t trail for long as Holden Brauner (undecided) hit a two-run single in the top of the third. The Suns would add an insurance run in the next inning thanks to a RBI single from Connor O’Sullivan (undecided). O’Sullivan’s hit would end up being the key to victory as the Dawgs would threaten, scoring a run of their own in the bottom half of that same inning. But the Suns defense would hold firm after that, only allowing one hit in the final three innings.

Starting pitcher Stephen Cherepanya of Rollins earned the win. He pitched for four innings and allowed eight hits and three runs, while also striking out one batter. William Rollings (undecided) and Robert Lastra of Bethune Cookman were the ones who came out of the bullpen. Rollings went two innings and allowed only a single hit while striking out one batter while Lastra was on the mound for the final inning of the game, in which he struck out two of the three batters he faced.

Game two was a close, defensive battle that saw the two teams combined for five hits. The Suns initially took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second thanks to a home run from Gavin Thomas of Davidson, his third of the season. The team held the lead until the Dawgs tied it in the top of the sixth. But the Suns responded in the bottom half of that same inning with a RBI single from pitch-hitter Jesus Rodriguez (undecided) in the bottom of the sixth. The defense then held firm in the top of the seventh and came away with the 2-1 victory.

Starting pitcher Mattox Meeks of Florida gulf coast got the win after throwing for five innings in which he only allowed three hits, gave up no runs and struck out a season-high seven batters. Paul Janeczko undecided) earned the save after retiring three straight batters in the final inning of the game.

The Suns will be back in action on Tuesday July 1 when the team faces off against the Leesburg Lightning at Pat Thomas Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
