MYSTIC, CT - The Ocean State Waves fell to the Mystic Schooners Tuesday night, 5-4, in a roller-coaster Opening Day matchup. Mystic had control early behind a great outing from starter Andrew Cutler (George Washington): 3.0 IP, 0 hits, 5 strikeouts. A Jack Harley (Virginia Tech) two-RBI single and a Tyree Jackson (Hudson Valley CC) sacrifice fly got the scoring started in the bottom of the 3rd, as Mystic jumped out to a 3-0 lead.
Caleb Hughes (Southern Miss) was able to stop the bleeding allowing just one hit over the next 2.1 IP. The Waves were able to get a run back in the 6th, thanks to a sac-fly from outfielder Zac Zyons (Bryant). The Waves then capitalized on a disastrous 7th inning for Mystic. Multiple errors, wild pitches and a hit batter led to 3 runs for the Waves, an RBI single for shortstop Greg Pettay (South Alabama), as well as a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 7th.
Quick to respond, however, Schooners catcher Davis Johnson (Notre Dame) turned a routine pop-up into an inside-the-park home run after a misplayed catch and errant throw to 1st base. With the scored tied in the 8th inning, Ocean State got the potential go-ahead run to third base, but left him stranded. In the bottom of the inning, another Davis Johnson RBI put Mystic up 5-4. Toby Schiedt (Bryant) came in to close the game for the Schooners and delivered a 5-4 victory with a 1- 2-3 inning.
The Waves will look to bounce back this Thursday at North Adams, 6:30 PM first pitch.
