On a day where only two out of the five games scheduled were played due to inclement weather, the results did not disappoint. North Shore and Newport pitching combined for twenty-four strikeouts over the course of their game, with the Gulls taking home the win 1-0. The Waves and Schooners had quite the game in South Kingston. Both teams' pitching combined for twenty-six punchouts, with seventeen belonging to the victorious Waves.
North Shore Navigators vs. Newport Gulls

Lynn, MA- The Newport Gulls defeated the North Shore Navigators 1-0 Tuesday night behind a stellar pitching performance that resulted in sixteen strikeouts. The Gulls wasted no time in establishing their bullpen’s dominance. Finbar O’Brien (Gonzaga), the Gulls starting pitcher, struck out two in the first inning and got a third Navigator to fly out to end the inning. North Shore’s Starting pitcher, Oisin Lee (Notre Dame), struck out the side in the bottom of the first to keep the score even. The game continued to be a back and forth match, where both teams traded quick innings keeping each other off the board.
The Gulls finally struck gold in the top of the sixth when Michael Gupton (Samford) sacrificed himself and grounded to the shortstop, allowing AJ Evasco (Kansas State) to cross home plate. Both defenses were then able to hold each other scoreless for the rest of the innings as the two bullpens dueled, totaling 24 total strikeouts.
The Gulls ace Finbar O’Brien was credited with the win following a five inning and 11 strikeout performance while fellow Gulls Aidan Coleman (Pittsburgh) was granted the save while his counterpart Colin Dowdle (Holy Cross), the Navigators pitcher, was issued a loss.
The North Shore Navigators are back in action Thursday night when they sail to Martha’s Vineyard and take on the sharks. The Newport Gulls return to action Wednesday night as they host the visiting North Adams Steeplecats.
Ocean State Waves vs. Mystic Schooners
Final Score: Ocean State 8, Mystic 4
South Kingston, RI- The Waves hosted the Schooners for one of two games that took place Tuesday night, after most got cancelled due to inclement weather. The Waves got straight to work in the bottom of the first inning when Kolton Reynolds (Arkansas Fayetteville) walked in the first run of the game, which was followed by Brandon DeGoti (U of Miami) scoring on a wild pitch to quickly put Ocean State up 2-0. Ryan Gerety (Northeastern) added on to the lead in the bottom of the second with an RBI double, making the score 3-0 after two.
Mystic was able to get on the board in the top of the third, when David Mendez (Vanderbilt) hit an RBI single to bring the score to 3-1. Eric Cha (Northeastern) reached first on a fielder’s choice, which scored another run to make the score 3-2. In the bottom half of the inning, Matthew Brinker (Northeastern) mashed a solo home run, answering right back for the Waves, and making it 4-2. In the top of the fourth inning, David Mendez (Vanderbilt) reached first base on an error, allowing a run to score and putting Mystic within one run of the Waves. In the bottom half of the inning, Greg Pettay (South Alabama) hit an RBI double, Gavin Gregor (Bryant) drove Pettay in with a single, and Brandon DeGoti (U of Miami) scored on a wild pitch to put the Waves up 7-3 after four.
Ryan Gerety (Northeastern) kept his performance going with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Ocean State a five run lead, up 8-3. In the top of the ninth, down to their last out, AJ Ashettino (Northeastern) hit an RBI single to give Mystic hope, but that wouldn’t be enough as they’d fall to the Waves, 8-4. Ocean State pitching was in control the entire game, with the staff combining for seventeen strikeouts.
The Waves head to Martha’s Vineyard to take on the Sharks tomorrow at 7:05pm, while the Schooners take a day off before heading to North Adams to play the SteepleCats on Thursday, June 19th, at 6:30pm.
