Blues Drop Second Straight Game In Walkoff Loss To Gulls
Date: Jun 17, 2025
The Newport Gulls hosted the Bristol Blues for a game at Cardines Field on Monday, June 16th. The Gulls coming off a little bit of a losing streak started right handed pitcher Drew DeLucia (Franklin Pierce) and the Blues off to a hot start in the summer threw Brendan Yagesh (Virginia Tech).
It was a fast start to the game as the first six innings was a pitchers duel on this Monday night. The offense began to start getting hot in the 7th inning and it became a fight until the very end.
The Gulls got something going in the late innings of this game taking a one run lead over the Blues, 2-1, but that lead did not last long as Bristol tied the game up with a sac fly in the 9th to force extra innings for the first time this summer in Newport.
Extra innings did not disappoint here at Cardines. The Blues took a one run lead on a go ahead sac fly by Tommy Ahlers (Keene State) in the top of the 10th. The Gulls and pitcher Jack Cropper (Northeastern) got out of a jam in the 10th and kept Newport's chances alive.
In the bottom of the 10th, Petey Craska (Northern Alabama) hit a sac fly to tie the game up at 3 a piece and send it to the final inning that was played, the 11th.
The Bristol Blues took the lead in the 11th inning, 4-3, and it gave Newport one last chance to win the game.
The big hit in extras came off the bat of Michael Gupton (Samford) to tie this game up at 4 a piece and then the Gulls loaded the bases with no one out.
The game finished with a walk-off walk by Kyle Branch (Oklahoma) on four straight pitches and the Gulls beat the Blues in 11 innings, 5-4.
This game pushed Newport up to 6-5 on the season, while it set Bristol back to 7-4. The Gulls next matchup is on Tuesday, June 17th, as they travel and face the North Shore Navigators. This game will be shown on NECBL+ and first pitch is at 6:05 pm.
