After a 239 day drought, college baseball is back and opening weekend brought on some incredible matchups and new starts across the collegiate landscape. We are now 105 days away from the NECBL opening day, and are anticipating an exceptional season at Old Mountain Field, with some promising performances from our 2025 Waves in just the first weekend of their seasons. Earning the first round of Whalers Brewery Player of the Week honors are graduate student Bobby Marsh from the University of Miami and freshman Luke Billings from Wake Forest University.
Bobby Marsh made a splash in his debut with the Hurricanes, contributing to three opening weekend wins against Niagara in eleven plate appearances. Marsh had a heroic opening day, reaching base on all four at-bats, recording two doubles, and bringing in four runs in the Canes’ 14-2 victory over the Purple Eagles. The Pennsylvania added a double to bring in two runs on their Sunday matinee, to earn a weekend sweep in their home opener.
Freshman Luke Billings made his collegiate debut for the Demon Deacons in their opening series against Marist. Billings came in to close out the day, getting the job done in just 18 pitches, the least of any Wake Forest pitcher on the day. Billings struck out three-of-four batters faced, sacrificing only one hit and no runs on the day, to secure an 11-4 win over the Red Foxes on opening day.
We’re so proud of all of our Waves on opening weekend, and cannot wait to see all they accomplish this season. Only 105 days until Waves baseball is back! Stay tuned into our Instagram, @OceanStateWaves, and X @OceanStateWaves, for live updates on your current and former Waves.
