Cartersville, GA - The Cartersville Cannons completed a series sweep at home over the Atlanta Blues on Saturday night in a 12-9 victory at Georgia Highlands College Baseball Complex.
Tied 9-9 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Alec Hotaling hit an RBI single bringing in Will Fincher for the go-ahead run. Then, Aiden Larkin added to the lead with an RBI single into left field that scored two runners.
Joseph Gill finished the game in the top of the ninth for the Cannons, receiving the win in two innings of work, allowing one hit, no runs and striking out five Blues batters.
Larkin finished the game 2/4 with three RBIs, including a two-run home run over the left field wall in the third inning.
After a 4-1 win on Friday night in a game with little offense, both bats came alive right away on Saturday. The Blues struck first with four runs in the first inning, thanks to a three-run blast from Dylan Jones, and eventually were up 8-3 in the bottom of the third. However, the Cannons got a four-run inning of their own, bringing the game to 8-7 heading to the fourth inning.
With the sweep, the Cannons are in firm possession of the sixth and final playoff spot in the Sunbelt League, leading the Blues by 2.5 games with only four games remaining in the regular season.
The Cannons closed out their home schedule with a victory, and will now play the Atlanta Crackers and Brookhaven Bucks on the road next week. The Blues will host the Choccolocco Monsters, currently in first place in the SBL, for two games and then finish their season with a series at home against the Atlanta Crackers.
