Waves top Sharks in Father's Day contest

Date:  Source: Ocean State Waves

With many fathers in attendance, the Ocean State Waves reinstated their residency in the win column with 7-4 topping of the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks last night.

A slow start to the contest, the two coastal division foes battled in a no-score affair through the first two innings. The Waves however, found offensive success first in the bottom of the third. An inning that saw Tristan Head, Donovan Cash and Aaron Walton all crossing home plate, Ocean State claimed a 3-0 lead at the end of the opening trimester off of two base hits, a walk and a hit batter.

The Waves tacked on two more runs when Gregg Pettay and Eric Genther saw themselves across the plate with another two hit inning. However, none of the hits scored themselves as Pettay reached by error and Genther was hit by a pitch.

The fifth inning also contributed to another two-run inning as Tommy Melusky singled and scored while Zac Zyons came home after drawing a walk.

However, the seventh and eighth inning presented an opportunity for the Sharks to mount a comeback. As the Ocean State bats cooled off, the Vineyard bats opened up the top of the seventh with offensive dominance.

The first five batters got on base, two by a base hit, two by a hit by pitch and one by a walk. Three runs came across as a result of the rocky start and put the Sharks right back onto the ballgame, cutting the deficit to 7-3.

Another run came in for Vineyard after the leadoff man for the Sharks got on by a fielding error, bringing the score to 7-4.

However, a save in the ninth from Dawson Logie closed the game for the Waves and snapped the Ocean State losing streak.

The Waves are back in action tonight at 6:30 p.m. when they visit the Mystic Schooners for the second time this season, looking to avenge an initial 6-5 defeat last week.
