Gulls Slip Past Navs Tuesday
Date: Jun 18, 2025
The Pell Bridge series continued last night in Wakefield with the Newport Gulls evening up the series with a 9-4 victory over the Ocean State Waves.
A win heavily buoyed by two key innings, the Gulls put up seven of their nine total runs in the second and eighth innings.
After a single run crossed in the first after brody Szako was brought home by a double from Newpoort’s Randy Seymour, the Gulls offense exploded in the second through smart at-bats and timely swings of the bat.
The Gulls’ leadoff man in Dixon Williams got himself on base with a single and after stealing second and third base successfully, a throwing error from behind home plate allowed him to scamper home to make the Newport lead 2-0.
Following the secondary strike to the Waves on their home turf, Nolan Stevens blasted a ball out towards centerfield. As the ball dropped out of view and into the trees behind the outfield fence, Stevens alongside two previously walked batters celebrated at home with a fresh 5-0 lead for the visitors.
The Waves were able to respond slowly after the initial deficit though, as the Waves brought home four runs in one man increments spaced between the second and sixth inning. In an immediate response to Newport, Aaron Walton walked and later was brought home by an RBI single from Rob Butler.
The fourth inning for Ocean State saw increased offensive production with three straight singles to open up the half inning. Although it was only the leadoff man in Eric Genther to come home to score as Walton’s RBI single was the last baserunner for the inning with the next three batters going down, two to strikes.
The fifth inning featured the highlight play for Ocean State, as Zac Zyons launched a no-doubt homer over the right field wall bringing the score to 6-3. Another run came across in the sixth as well when Walton walked for a second time before maneuvering his way to third before reaching the plate on a fielder’s choice groundout from Butler.
Even though the Waves slowly chipped it back to a 6-4 deficit, a three run inning from the Gulls in the eight sealed the deal for the Wave’s home opener as they dropped their third straight game.
The Waves are back in action tonight once again at Old Mountain Field at 4:35 when they host the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks in another coastal division matchup.
