Ocean State Natives Shine in Week Five

Date:  Source: Ocean State Waves

After another astounding weekend in the collegiate baseball atmosphere, the seasons are getting hot and our guys are stepping into their roles to contribute in big ways. Our hometown boys in particular highlighted the weekend, making the Ocean State proud! Earning Player of the Week honors are South County natives Zac Zyons and Evan Maloney.

Taking home Rienzi Pasta Player of the Week Honors is junior outfielder Zac Zyons out of Bryant University. Zyons, who was born and raised in South Kingstown, has played an essential role in the Bulldogs success on the year both at the plate and in the field. In a quick trip to the city to visit the Northeastern Huskies in a mid-week matchup, Zyons got the ball rolling in his first at-bat of the game, launching a grand slam to right, giving the Bulldogs a four-run lead. The Bulldogs swept a three-game home-and-home series with the in-state rivals, Brown University this past weekend, with big performances from the junior. In the first game of the doubleheader, Zyons reached base on all six at-bats; two hits, two walks, and two hit-by-pitches, driving in two runs and scoring three of his own in the 17-run offensive showcase in a victorious opening game. The Bulldog’s explosive weekend brings them to 8-9 on the season as they head into a four-game homestand.

On the mound for the hometown team is University of Rhode Island’s Evan Maloney, taking home Whalers Brewery Pitcher of the Week honors. In his first start with the Rams at Bill Beck field, the North Kingstown native held the Northeastern Huskies to one run to give Rhode Island the security on the offensive side of the ball. Maloney recorded two season highs on the weekend in innings pitched (7.0), and strikeouts (6). This dominant performance brings Maloney to 22 strikeouts in 21 innings on the year, and the Rams added another victory to their schedule as they head into their midweek matchups against Connecticut and Stonehill.

We are so proud of our hometown guys and can’t wait to see them back at Old Mountain this summer! For real-time updates, follow us on instagram and X @OceanStateWaves.
