After week two of the 2019 campaign, the Palm Springs Power remain undefeated on the season. The Power swept the weekly awards after recording eight wins on the week, including two doubleheader sweeps on the road.
Player of the Week: Hobbs Nyberg – Power/BYU
Nyberg had a stellar week at the plate for the Power, collecting 10 hits including three doubles and two triples to go with four RBI. He walked five times and scored six runs while also swiping four bags. Nyberg helped lead the Power to eight wins over the week and recorded three multi-hit games. He is batting .463 on the season.
Pitcher of the Week: Seth Hougesen – Power/Delta State
Hougesen put up good numbers in a start against the San Diego Force on Jun 16, tossing six innings and striking out 12 to earn his third win of the season. He allowed just one hit and one walk in his outing and did not allow a run. He holds a 0.93 ERA on the season.
Palm Springs Power – Alisha Alexander
The Power continued their dominant roll through the season with eight wins in week two. They opened the week with a doubleheader sweep of the Pirates on the road, and capped it with a pair of wins in a twin bill at the San Diego Force. Nyberg (BYU) and Brett Young (Delta State) had strong showings at the plate for the Power, combining for 20 hits and nine RBI. Young stole nine bases in eight games. On the mound, Hougesen and Jesus Chavez (Oklahoma Baptist) combined for 21 strikeouts, with Chavez doing so mostly out of the bullpen.
Cal Jays – Cassidy Thornburg
The California Jays had a strong showing this week which boosted them in league standings and improved their record to 4-3. The Jays lost their first game at home 5-1 to the SoCal Stros, but bounced back on the road when they beat the Inland Valley Buccaneers 10-1 on Thursday and then again 12-10 on Friday. They were 2-1 on the series, as they lost their third game to the IV Bucs 7-6. Overall, it was a strong week for the Jays to improve their record and continue to make their name known in the SCCBL.
San Diego Force – Cassidy Thornburg
The San Diego Force started their week with a doubleheader on Tuesday at Cal Poly Pomona against the Inland Valley Buccaneers. They won the first game 5-1 after 11 long innings, which included a standout performance by Tyler Van Stone (Hawaii Pacific) on the mound. Van Stone had a no-no through seven innings before giving up just one run and a hit in the eighth, having a total of 111 pitches and 13 strikeouts on the day. The Force dropped the second game 7-0, but then found redemption on the road on Thursday when they beat the West Coast Bulldogs 9-4. Sunday, they hosted the undefeated Palm Springs Power and unfortunately, dropped both games. With a chip on their shoulder, the Force look to be the first to make a dent in the Palm Springs Power’s record when they meet again on Tuesday at Palm Springs Stadium.
Inland Valley Pirates – Jordan Quinn
With five straight losses to the Palm Springs Power (6-1, 9-6, 8-2, 5-1, 8-2), the Inland Valley Pirates experienced a rough second week of SCCBL action. For the Pirates, there were bright spots at the plate with Travis Aversa (Undecided), Riley Kaspar (UCI), Ryan Pho (Holy Names) and Hayden Winters (Cypress), each having multi-hit games. On the mound for the Pirates, Bryan Pope (CBU) threw four innings and gave up no runs.
SoCal Stros – Cade Temple
Week two was a light one for the SoCal Stros. With just two games on their schedule, the Stros split their week with a 5-1 win against the Cal Jays and an 8-4 loss to the Power. They open their week against the Bucs on Monday.
Inland Valley Bucs – Jordan Quinn
In week two of the SCCBL season, the Inland Valley Bucs opened their slate of games with an 8-5 loss to Southern Nevada. A 2-3 performance at the plate by Benny Perucho (CSU Monterey Bay), as well as the pitching of Max Sterner (Occidental) who had three strikeouts and gave up no runs in three innings on the mound highlighted the game. After a 5-1 loss to the San Diego Force, the Bucs rebounded with a 7-0 win. Following two losses to the California Jays by scores of 10-1 and 12-10, the Bucs came back to get a much needed win with a score of 7-6.
