PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The 2019 regular season has come to a close and four SCCBL teams are left standing. Following the 2019 All-Star Game and Home Run Derby, the final games were played to determine who advances to the playoffs and for the first time in SCCBL history, the SoCal Stros are in the mix.
Playoffs will begin Tuesday with the best-of-three opening round. The Championship Series will begin Friday and will also be a best-of-three format.
The Palm Springs Power finished the season undefeated in league play at a perfect 25-0. The San Diego Force hold the second seed with a 13-12 record. The Inland Valley Pirates and SoCal Stros both finished with a record of 11-14 with the Pirates winning the tiebreaker to take the third seed. The Stros earned the fourth seed in their first SCCBL Playoffs appearance.
As the top seeds, the Power and Force will have home-field advantage in the opening round of the playoffs. The highest seed remaining heading into the Championship Series will have home-field advantage.
The Power will host all three games in their best-of-three series with the Stros, with the Stros playing as the home team in game one. The Power will be the home team for game two and three (if necessary). All three games (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) will begin at 7:05 p.m. at Palm Springs Stadium.
The San Diego Force will travel to Amerige Park for game one of their series against the Pirates. The Force will host the final game (two games if necessary). Tuesday’s game will begin at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday's game will be at 4 p.m. at Madison HS, and Thursday's game will be at 4 p.m. at Morley Park in San Diego.
All-Star Game Recap
After Evan Banks (Stros/Azusa Pacific) defeated Ryan Sepede (Power/BYU) in the Home Run Derby tiebreaker, the 2019 SCCBL All-Star Game saw the East Team come away with a 10-6 victory over the West. The East was represented by players from the Palm Springs Power, the Inland Valley Pirates, and the Inland Valley Buccaneers. The West was represented by the San Diego Force, the Cal Jays, and the SoCal Stros. The West offense was highlighted by Kyle Oyama (Stros/CBU), who was 1-3, with one hit-by-pitch and two runs scored. Also stepping up for the West was Andrai Wright (Force) and Colton Combs (Jays/CSUSB), who each had a hit and a run scored in the game. For the East, the Palm Springs Power were well-represented on offense with Austin Bull (Power/GCU) and Matt Sosa (Power/Iowa) each providing two RBI, and Brett Young (Power/Delta State) going 2-3 with two runs scored. Also contributing to the East victory, Juan Guardado (Pirates) and Dylan Orick (Bucs / UCR) each provided two singles and an RBI.
Player of the Week: Andrai Wright – San Diego Force
Andrai Wright (Savannah State) stood out among several season-ending performances this week. He scored three runs, had two doubles and knocked in five to put him at a .529 batting average on the week in conference play. In the All-Star game, Wright hit a single and scored a run to contribute to the West team’s offense.
Pitcher of the Week: Jack Jett – Power/Hofstra
Jack Jett (Hofstra) continued a strong season for the Power with a win over the Jays on July 10. The starter went six innings of one-hit baseball and struck out nine. He did not allow a run.
